Clan Leader Nie’s brow furrowed. “What do you mean?”
Did he really not notice? Meng Yao found that hard to believe. Then again, there were many things about Nie Mingjue that Meng Yao found hard to believe. “Zongzhu, that girl was clearly more interested in your attention than passing off some news.”
To Meng Yao’s surprise, Nie Mingjue laughed, loud and hearty from his chest. Getting the feeling he was being belittled, the hair rose on the back of Meng Yao’s neck. He was ready to retort, when Nie Mingjue said, “Is that what you are worried about? Meng Yao, I have no interest in a random servant. It would be wrong of me to pursue a relationship with a disciple, whose position is lower than my own.”
“Zongzhu,” Meng Yao said, his voice quiet, “you and I are sleeping together because you took an interest in a random servant on the Hejian front.”
Nie Mingjue paled as he said it.

Jin Guangyao’s robe falls loose, revealing pale skin. His collar is flushed, lungs rising and falling rapidly. His neck, where Nie Mingjue’s hand closes around it, is wrung red, wrist pinned beside him on the bed.
Jin Guangyao’s other hand clings to the one around his throat. His glare is full of hatred for Nie Mingjue as a grin slowly unfurls the corners of his lip like the fronds of sneaking, forgotten greenery.
“Finish what you started, Chifeng-zun.”

While staying in Qinghe, Nie Mingjue learns that Meng Yao once played the qin.

Huaisang will inherit the sect one day, and he'll have to rule it; at least Nie Mingjue can try to prepare him for it.
Hopefully, Meng Yao will still be around—Nie Mingjue came to rely on him, and if Meng Yao decides to leave... That would not be good. The sect would manage, of course, but—Nie Mingjue doesn't want to manage without him.

“Will you face me?” Meng Yao asked.
The corner of Mingjue’s lip twerked up wryly, showing off a dimple. He reassumed a passive stance. “Meng Yao, I thought we agreed not to fight each other anymore.”
“This is not a fight, Da-ge. This is sparring. You should know that.”
