Summary
In Konoha mythology, shinobi summons live in the underworld, mingling with the spirits of the dead. Twice a year, when the day and night are of equal length, doors open between the two worlds, allowing those who stumble upon them to pass through.
When Iruka unknowingly passes by one of these doors, something is waiting for him in the shadows. Something that smells the kyuubi on him and lures him through into the other world for its own nefarious purposes.
Kakashi follows him into the underworld, determined to bring him back. But he better find Iruka before the dawn, because once the sun rises the doors will close, and whoever’s left on the wrong side will be trapped with no way home.

Summary
It’s been a year since Iruka unmasked the ANBU Hound, and since then he and Kakashi have grown closer than Iruka ever dared to dream. But there are still things Kakashi keeps from him: he won’t talk about his father or his genin team, although rumours about their deaths have always been rife.
Iruka’s chance to learn more finally comes when they celebrate Obon together – the summer festival of the dead. One sweltering night, they invite the spirits of their loved ones into Kakashi’s home, but on the second night, when they try to send them back to the underworld, something goes wrong. The dead still linger in Kakashi’s house – and they’re restless.
All Iruka has is a handful of seals, a book of ghost stories, and his feelings for Kakashi, which burn so brightly he’s starting to question their nature. But he will protect Kakashi and no one can stop him – not the living or the dead.

“Yes,” Hound said, and he sounded very guilty. “Maybe don’t mention to anyone that I brought you here.”
Iruka was still absorbing that. He’d suspected, of course, but he hadn’t allowed himself to believe it. It had seemed too absurd to be true. He’d been sleeping in Hound’s bed. He was wearing Hound’s shirt. Hound had said fuck you to all of the rules and brought Iruka into his home to care for him.

During one of these visits, he notices that Iruka’s hands are covered in scars from teaching weapons training. Kakashi wonders why he doesn’t simply use a barrier seal to shield himself…and discovers that, to Iruka, some things are worth a little pain to protect.

“Genma pierced them,” Iruka corrected him. “With a senbon. We were both very drunk.”
Kakashi had always respected Iruka, but now that respect bordered on fearful reverence. He wouldn’t have allowed Genma near his nipples sober, with or without a senbon in hand. Iruka must have balls of steel – and not just the ones in his nipples.

Iruka absolutely does not believe in ghosts. So he’s not impressed when he’s sent with Kakashi on an ANBU mission to banish a ghost who has allegedly been possessing brides on their wedding days.
Between the ghost hunting (which is not in Iruka’s job description, for the record) and Kakashi’s outrageous flirting, Iruka was already reaching dangerous levels of sass. But then Kakashi comes up with the bright idea that they should pretend they’re a couple to lure out the ghost. And not just any couple – a bride and groom, about to be happily married.
If anyone tries to put Iruka in a dress, the ghost will be the least of their problems.

Iruka’s life has fallen apart in the year since the kyuubi attack. He spends his days pulling pranks, arguing with his least favourite ANBU, Hound, and becoming more obsessed with teenage jounin Hatake Kakashi for reasons he doesn’t entirely understand. Then he starts hearing the stories.
Several orphans have gone missing – branded as runaways by a village still licking its wounds, no one is searching for them. But there are rumours whispered by the village children: rumours of the bogeyman, a shadowy figure who emerges from the underworld, perhaps a man or a monster, with messages from dead parents to lure the orphans back to the Land of the Dead.
Iruka doesn’t know what to believe. But the danger is real, the adults aren’t listening, and somebody needs to stop the bogeyman. It might as well be him.
