Jack sings along to the music playing over the kitchen speaker, swaying a little. He’s a terrible singer (medically diagnosed by Santos in a scathing review of his late night tunes), but he’s going through an Olivia Dean phase. Sue him.
The late summer sun is streaming through the open kitchen windows, painting everything gold as the breeze carries the sound of birdsong and passing conversation in. Robby is still out with Jake for an afternoon game of basketball, but due back any time.
He blows out a nervous breath, the velvet box in his pocket burning against his thigh.

Or, Jack cooks dinner, remembers, and asks Robby to marry him. In that order.

Summary
“Just a cold,” is what Robby keeps saying about his condition. Just a cold when he’s coughing into his fist, just a cold when he’s coughing into his elbow, just a cold when he’s showing no other symptoms of a cold whatsoever. Just a cold when he starts carrying tissues in his pocket to cough into whenever he needs it, which is often.
And the kicker is that he thinks Jack doesn’t notice.

Dennis closed his eyes. This was it. The moment he'd been dreading and hoping for in equal measure. The moment that would either save him or destroy him.
"You," he whispered. "It's you. It's always been you."
Silence. Dennis forced himself to look, to see whatever was coming – rejection, pity, horror, disgust.
Robby was staring at him. Not with disgust, though. Not with pity. Something else. Something Dennis couldn't name.
"You've been dying," Robby said slowly. "For months. Because of me."

Jack's jaw tightened. He heard the deflection, Robby knew he did, but he didn't push. Just nodded and reached for Robby's wrist tugging him back down.
"Okay, a couple days," Jack offered. "Or longer."
