    Summary

    It is relief that washes off of Bruce in great waves of uncertainty. Talia relishes in it all, dipping her feet into this new sea of understanding he's letting her in on. She wonders if he even realises that she knows, that deep down;

    Batman is glad the Joker is dead. Batman is even more pleased that it was not him who killed the Joker.

    The air between them smells like vindication.

    Talia smiles to herself, "I didn't do it for you."

    (Talia al Ghul kills the Joker. This manages to solve a lot of problems.)

    Randall's all set to be in Craggy Dale for the weekend until it becomes clear that no one will actually be able to take him down there. Well, no one except for Hershel, and that means an adventure down from London!

    Flora's not one to turn that prospect down, so she tags along too.

    Hershel Layton, feeling rather out of place, made his excuses and left Monte d'Or as quickly as possible, with little to no intention of returning.

    Unfortunately for him, his apprentice had other plans.

    Summary

    When they’re seventeen and Randall falls into that stupid, awful pit, Hershel sees them. For a split second, before his form vanishes altogether into the darkness - white feathers.

    It doesn’t matter. Flight takes practice. Flight takes specific muscle groups. Flight takes wings that aren’t milliseconds-old. Flight takes stability, wind conditions, knowledge. This is common sense. It is the explanation given to any young child who asks about why the wings Grandmother has don’t act like the wings that the gulls outside have.

    Hershel doesn’t even consider for an instant the possibility that Randall might not have died at the bottom of that horrible crevasse.

    (Or: Nonlinear scenes from an AU where a person fledges wings only after they believe their soulmate lost to them.)
