“Hello. Nice to finally meet you.” Her accent made the words lilt and blur together. When she smiled at him, it was a crooked, lazy grin that Shane would recognize anywhere.
She stood up, one hip leaning against the couch. She was only an inch or two shorter than Shane.
Of course Ilya’s mom is tall, Shane thought in a daze. Like that made sense. Like any of this made sense.

Shane frowned at himself in the bathroom mirror. He had a lot to be concerned about: he was in an anxiety-inducing social situation in a city that had hated him his entire NHL career, and he was pretty sure one of his best friends was keeping a secret from him.
He sighed and adjusted his jacket. The suit he had worn to and from the game against Boston earlier was one of his – and Ilya’s – favorites, but he still felt self-conscious. There weren’t any guidelines on what to wear to dinner with the woman your husband had hooked up with for years and then almost married for citizenship and whom you still felt deep flashes of jealousy toward if you let yourself think about it for too long.
