‘Sir,’ Erik says, ‘you need to come with me right away!’
‘I can’t,’ says blue-eyes in a posh British accent — really, nobody’s eyes should be that blue or that piercing even through thick glasses — not pausing in his frantic search. There’s a frantic look in his eyes and Erik wonders how much of it is because of smoke inhalation and how much of it is because of genuine despair over whatever blue-eyes isn’t finding. ‘I can’t leave without Matilda!’
‘Okay,’ Erik says, moving closer to blue-eyes. ‘Where was she when the alarm went off?’
‘She was right here.’ Blue-eyes points at the settee and bends to look around it. ‘Matilda!’ He shouts into the small flat, cupping his hands around his mouth. ‘Where are you, darling?’
Any other time Erik would have wondered who Matilda is and how she’s related to blue-eyes — is she a relative? A sister? A girlfriend, perhaps? But now, Erik does none of that, because, one, Erik’s on duty, and two, they don’t have the fucking time.

Summary
It has almost been a year, Charles thinks to himself, and a shudder runs through him at just the thought. A year and it still feels like eons ago that he’d been assigned what would be the biggest case of his career. He still remembers how excited he had been, how he had spent nights in this very office, his desk brimming with case files and tea mugs.
Only a year, and Charles barely recognises his life before it. A year that had aged him a decade and shattered his heart beyond repair.
There was a reason why Charles had blown his own cover and returned to duty, why he had quit active field work and had decided to teach at the Academy, why he still can’t sleep some days and wakes up in a cold sweat. And all those reasons begin and end with one Mafia boss, Erik Magnus Lehnsherr.
Infiltrating Erik’s den to collect evidence to incriminate him had been Charles’s job, yes. But falling in love with Erik wasn’t. That, Charles did all by himself.

Summary
Charles takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly, as if bracing for a fight. ‘I need you to pretendtobemyfiancé,’ he says so quickly that Erik wonders whether he’s hearing things.
Erik pulls the phone from his ear to read the name on the screen. Still Charles.
‘What?’ he asks incredulously.
Charles groans on the other end, and when he begins speaking again, his voice sounds strained and tired. ‘I wouldn’t have asked if I knew a better way, okay?’
‘I don’t understand, Charles. Pretend to be your fiancé? Why?’

Summary
Two years ago, Erik had seen an ad on a communal mutant app asking for someone to share a two-bedroom flat with. The man who had posted the ad, Charles Francis Xavier, at the time had been a freshly minted postgraduate eyeing the position of a junior lecturer in the Genoshan University, with a lease amount to a nice house too hefty to bear on his own.
The house itself was more agreeable to Erik and — more importantly — to Erik’s meagre stipend.
Charles had declared that he’s gay and a telepath the day they’d met, and that Erik should look elsewhere if he had a problem with either of those. In response, Erik had plucked the pen tucked into Charles’s breast pocket with his powers and had signed his half of the lease agreement.
Erik’s not an easy person to live with — and Az will enthusiastically attest to it. He’s weird and particular and controlling and territorial — and that’s just the first four entries on Az’s list. He doesn’t know what to attribute it to, but living with Charles for a roommate is… easy.
