He moves to take a seat next to Pony and rests a hand on the back of his neck, “What’s goin’ on, kid?”
Pony glances down at the half finished sheet of paper in front of him before looking back up and muttering, “Homework.”
Darry raises an eyebrow, “Didn’t you already finish your work for tonight? I checked it all earlier.”
At this, Pony at least has the decency to look a bit sheepish as he tries to hide from his brother’s stern gaze. “I, uh,” he clears his throat, “I’m sorry, I just forgot to do this one…”
Pony bites his lip, and Darry feels his stomach clench as he notices the tears pooling in his brother’s eyes. He shifts his hand down to squeeze Pony’s shoulder, “Well you can finish it in the morning, okay? C’mon, let’s get you back to bed.”

"Instead, Dally gently (so careful, tender in a way Soda had been sure Dally wasn’t capable of) propped Johnny’s shoulders up, sliding under him before allowing Johnny to lie back down, head in Dally’s lap. The kid made another noise, a keening sound that made Soda instinctively tighten his grip on Ponyboy. Dally’s right hand wove its way into Johnny’s hair again, while his left gently cradled the side of Johnny’s face, wiping away a tear.
Soda was almost sure he was dreaming. He could count on one hand the number of times he’d seen Dally touch anyone longer than five seconds, unless it was to beat the shit out of them."
After Johnny gets jumped by the Socs, the gang is there to pick up the pieces. Johnny is just glad he'll get to pick the TV channel in the morning.

During a specially chosen, one day camp over the summer for his track team, Ponyboy stupidly forgets to drink any water and faces the consequences.

'"Yeah? What else?" Darry asked, pulling his hand back so he could drive again and turned onto their street.
Pony shrugged, trying to figure out what else was wrong. Or, honestly, what wasn't wrong. Everything felt worn and crampy, especially his legs, and he felt like at any second he'd pass out and crack his head open on the dashboard. The dizziness and headaches hadn't stopped either, and the nausea... it was like nothing he ever felt before! And it had gotten significantly worse within the past, what, five minutes? He doesn't know how long they'd been driving home for. It could have been an hour already for all he knew, but the sun was still beating down so it couldn't have been.'

Screaming is one thing, but I know if I open my mouth again the sobs will come. I don't know how close the rest of the athletes and families are standing now, trying to get a look at the excitement, but the last thing I need is to turn on the waterworks in front of a bunch of Socs. I drift for a second before Darry's hand squeezing my shoulder brings me back. He runs his hand through my hair, pushing it out of my face before he rests his hand on my cheek to try and keep my focus.
