    “We could spar?” Zagreus asked softly, looking down from under his eyelashes at Achilles. Patroclus changed his mind. Maybe Zagreus was a good actor after all.

    Achilles’ eyes narrowed even further, turning to face Patroclus, who was keeping his expression carefully neutral as he offered a small shrug, as if to say, He’s your mentee.

    Achilles turned back to Zagreus. “I’m sorry, lad, but you know… maybe someone else could help you?”

    And here came the fruits of Patroclus’ labor.

    “What about you, sir?” Zagreus asked, voice almost coy. “Do you think you could show me?”

    Persephone had not come back for him. Hades needed to keep that in mind. She was back for Zagreus, for their son’s sake, not him. Persephone did not need him making her life harder than it had to be with his feelings; she was going to suffer plenty, trapped here again, she did not need him compressing her with his love.

    (Or, Persephone comes back to the Underworld, and Hades is very himself about it.)

    (Or, sometimes you do actually have to use your words if you want to understand someone.)

    [Sorry, I will just get this to go.] Charon signs, sliding the cup back towards Eurydice. But before she can respond, he feels a tap on his arm. Charon’s whole body stiffens, not used to being touched so freely out in public - or ever. His pale eyes slide down to the culprit - a short man, short by even most people's standards, dressed in the flashiest workout clothes Charon has ever seen, with dark hair and even darker eyes.

    Charon’s poor old heart stutters in his chest, unsure why this young, very attractive man is so freely tapping on him. Is Charon in his way? Does he need to talk to Eurydice? Why is he smiling so pleasingly up at Charon? He doesn’t seem at all scared of Charon’s general dark aura, as most people are, and Charon isn’t sure how to handle that.

    [You can sit with me if you’d like.] The man offers with a bright grin.

    “Wherever Zagreus goes, Death follows.”

    The Prince of the Underworld, by far, is not a deathless god, yet he simply cannot stay dead. Zagreus had always waited and wondered what it’s like to live. But in his wake, death follows him wherever he goes. A problem of sorts, when he wants nothing more than to escape, even if it means abandoning everything and everyone else, including Thanatos. While Thanatos has to realize, perhaps letting go of his Zagreus, is the only way he will grow into the god that he needs to be.

    They reunite after a long time of not seeing each other, after learning of Zagreus trying to escape the Underworld. Something goes wrong with it— Thanatos having to see Zagreus die for the first time— it changes everything from there. After all, it takes just one moment to change everything that’s after.

    An angsty hurt/comfort thanzag-centric fic that explores dying over and over and over, life and death, their domains as gods, and the most frustrating dance of slowburn yearning for each other.
