The mall is empty. Well, almost. It’s only been a few days since the grand opening so half the stores aren’t even fully set up yet and it’s 11 o’clock on a Tuesday so the only people who’d have the time to be here are people who don’t have school or a job to be at.
Which today includes Steve, Nancy and Jonathan. It might seem strange to say that, seeing as the summer holidays haven’t even started yet it, but it’s true.

Summary
Sometimes Rico feels like there are two versions of himself. There’s the version that’s pretty happy, likes skateboarding and music and video games. Then there’s the other version, who’s always angry, irritation simmering under the surface all the time, making him say shit or do shit that pisses people off.
He wishes he could shed it like a second skin, leave a hollow, desiccated, angry Rico behind and walk away lighter, freer. Most days that feels pretty impossible because which version of him is the real one anyway.

“His shirt’s on inside out,” Josh commented to Linda. Eddie opened the door to the breakroom and tried to let it close behind him, but that did not deter either of his colleagues. “Is this a walk of shame?”
“Well, I am walking,” Eddie confirmed, rounding the counter and beelining to the empty coffee pot. “And full of shame.”
“What happened?”
“I stood him up,” he answered, shortly.
After what was probably a very involved silent conversation between Linda and Josh, Josh said, “Eddie, if you aren’t ready, I’m sure he’d understand.”
“I am ready,” he said, detaching the water reservoir with more force than necessary. “I didn’t do it on purpose.”

‘He’s not my other dad, he’s just Buck.'
Although, there has been a vibe since they got back from El Paso and with them all living together, Dad and Buck hovering and circling around each other in a way that’s new. They’ve been sharing the bedroom at home and leaving the door ajar, which Chris feels is needlessly pointed, like he’s the parent and they’re the teenagers proving they’re not getting up to anything. Chris’s whole existence indicates his Dad’s track record on Getting Up To Things. Not that he wants to think about that. It's just. He really hates the idea his Dad is keeping stuff from him again. Especially something like this. Something that will change everything.
