Imogen’s entire body begins to vibrate, skin threatening to burst open, veins surging with intense heat she’s never felt the likes of before. The hairs on her arms stand on end, nerve endings alight, thrumming with energy. The air around her feels charged, like standing out in a field just before a storm.
She reaches a scarred arm, crackling with amethyst energy, forward to meet the baker’s rapidly approaching foot.
The boot makes contact with Imogen’s open palm with a blinding flash of white purple light and a thunderous boom, louder than the cabin’s collapse, louder than anything Imogen’s ever heard.
A pre-canon story following Imogen and the mysteriously musical Laudna as they flee Gelvaan and wander the wilds of Marquet.

Imogen doesn't know the woman bound to the chair, orchestral thoughts that flowed through her mind like a cooling balm, river water over blistered feet, breeze through windchimes now discordant; terror, anxiety, confusion. She feels Mama's eyes on her, looming at her back as she waits for the viper she's raised to unfurl and strike.
"We will never be separated again. Papa and I love you, little nimbus," Mama said.
Imogen doesn't know the woman bound to the chair, mirrored fractals arcing from her fingertips up her shoulders, ears cut to points by the dagger Papa gave her on her 16th birthday. Her chest burns with disgust at herself, at her parents.
Imogen doesn't know this woman, but she has never known a mind like hers.
Imogen doesn't think she knows her parents either.
Imogen doesn't want to be a Briarwood if it means this. Ignorance has shielded her, and perhaps Mama and Papa—Delilah and Sylas—have as well. She was raised to be ruthless like her mother, strong like her father, but the compassion grew in the cracks of her foundation. They told her she cared so much, so deeply, and one day it may hurt her.
That day has come.
Thus are the consequences of a bleeding heart.
