"D'you know Eddie?" Buck asks. His eyes are huge and earnest. It's not often these days that Eddie gets to see him this unguarded. Just needed to get him stoned out of his mind on painkillers, apparently. He's probably got a prescription in that stack of papers Eddie took. Maybe Eddie can run out and fill it for him while he sleeps. "He's my best—my best friend."

Eddie's heart does something traitorously squishy that he hopes doesn't show on his face. "Feeling's mutual, bud. Come on, lie down, sleep it off for a little bit, okay?"

    -

Or: Buck confesses something he doesn't mean to while on painkillers. Eddie spirals about it.

The Soldier doesn't know why he pulled the Target from the river. He doesn't know why his body isn't obeying the orders given to him by his mind. He doesn't know what to do next.
The only person promising answers is the Target himself. Luckily, the Soldier has his phone number.

    Summary

He shouldn't have been surprised that what he actually wanted paled in comparison to the entertainment he could offer to some ancient force who saw humans more as dollar store toys than things with agency. He shouldn't have been surprised when the broiling-black cleft of the Empty split open into a plain stone staircase leading upwards into the unknown, and he shouldn't have been surprised when the Empty split the face that didn't belong to It into a smile that didn't fit It.

"Don't look back, not even for a second," It said, "and you can have him back."

    Summary

“Will, can I ask you something?” Mike speaks up, more assured this time. “Yes,” Will replies softly, waiting. There's only the sound of silence for a long moment.
“Do you remember the painting that you gave to me last year?” He finally asks and Will's heart drops into his stomach instantly. Sitting up straight, he turns to face Mike who stares at him with furrowed eyebrows, his lips pressed into a thin, contemplating line. “The one you gave me in the van when we were looking for El?”

Will nods. “Yes, I remember.” Mike swallows, turning so he’s facing him straight on. “I was just thinking. Thinking about what you said and about, well about everything and I just need to know for sure if, if—” he stops there, biting at his cheek. His eyes don't leave Wills, not once.

“If what?” Will asks and he feels terrified, that day rushing back to him like an uncontrollable wave of burning hot water. Lies, misunderstood words, false confessions. Mike’s lips part ever so slightly and then they close, his eyes flickering back and forth between Wills, searching for something he doesn't fully understand. “If what you told me was the truth,” he finally asks, his words a whisper in the darkness of the basement. The truth.

    Summary

    “...Mike?”

“Yeah?” Mike replies, feeling all of the weirdness of having a conversation with himself come crashing over him.

“...Are things okay? Now? Is everybody okay?” his younger self says tentatively, and Mike’s eighteen year old heart breaks for all that this version of him has yet to experience.

“Yeah,” he all but whispers. “We’re okay.” He doesn’t tell his younger self about El, about the grief and the nightmares and the panicking that haven’t gone away. He doesn’t tell him about the fissures that have formed within the party, the chasm of grief that none of them can really bring themselves to speak about but which lingers in every room they share. He doesn’t talk about how he and Will haven’t fallen asleep in front of a movie together in a long time.

Thirteen year old Mike Wheeler wakes up in 1989, runs into his eighteen year old self, and has a lot of opinions.
