Mike knows he isn't normal. None of his family is since that attack. He has to keep it a secret. He must if he wants to stay with his friends, especially if it means being by Will's side. Will has always been an animal lover, that's why he's excited every time he comes home to his dog Chester. He doesn't get why there are times he can't see Mike. He doesn't get why Joyce doesn't want him to go too far into the woods. When he finds himself in danger, the only thing - animal? - that can save Will has fur the same color as his best friend Mike.

New Year's Eve, 1983. The heaviest snowfall Hawkins has seen in decades rages outside. Inside the Byers' house, Will's fever isn't the only thing burning him from the inside out. Likewise, the weight of not knowing what his best friend went through that week in November is crushing Mike to dust.

Will gasped against his mouth, setting something loose in Mike.
His fingers slid up into Will’s hair, tangling, tugging gently until Will shuddered against him.
“Oh—Will…fuck.” Mike choked out when Will tilted his hips forward, grinding slightly, testing the friction. Mike couldn't stop the moan that came out louder than he expected, vibrating off the walls of the closet.
The sound alone made Will’s fingers dig into Mike’s shoulders, nails leaving tiny crescent marks.
