Summary
Kakashi Hatake has survived wars, betrayals, and almost everyone he's ever loved. He's done his duty. He deserves a break, he decides. And then he decides, quite rightly, that he wants to retire. Or maybe take a long vacation.

“Do you always live like this?” she asked, gesturing vaguely at the apartment. “It’s… really empty.”
Kakashi looked up from his book, surveying his home as if seeing it for the first time. “Mhm. Never complained.”
“But there’s nothing fun,” Sakura insisted. “No colors. No—” She stopped in front of the plant by the bedroom window. “Is that thing actually alive?”
“For now.”

He stood for a moment in front of the mirror.
The reflection showed what it always did: a whole man, no visible wounds, no outward signs of having brushed against death. The uncovered eye was tired, but no more than usual. Nothing that betrayed what he’d done.
Kakashi looked away first.

basically everybody in Akatsuki dead except Kisame, Kks, Obito, Sasuke and Karin. + Konan but Konan is under Kotoamatsukami genjutsu to remain loyal.
A lot of this is Kakashi asking Why and Obito apologizing constantly. Which. Felt. He is so scared of fucking up all the time and then he does fuck up and it doesn't even matter because Kakashi will forgive him anyway. Loyal dog that he is. And in the end, deep in Obito's heart everything he does is for Kakashi and vice versa. 'Your dream will be kindness because you deserve kindness - more than I can give you' type shit.
Kks still doesn't know Tobi is Obito. Because Obito is a little #scared. He cares about that loser so fucking much it'd be horribly sweet if they weren't international terrorists.

“You will be branded a missing–nin and exiled from the village. There will be a bounty on your head, and you will be put into the bingo book, wanted dead or alive.” He said, then wondered aloud, “Where will you go?”
“We’ve found aid from a group named the Akatsuki.”
Hiruzen turned around, a question on his face. “We?”
Kakashi dropped down from the pipes above.
“Kakashi–san and I have found refuge within the Akatsuki.” Itachi said confidently, still wearing Kakashi’s too–big cloak.
If the Hokage was surprised at Kakashi’s sudden appearance, he didn’t show it. “Hatake Kakashi. I’ll admit, your presence here is… Most astonishing. It’s widely believed that your loyalty was unquestionable, so I ask why you would–”
“This village,” Kakashi said darkly, cutting off the Hokage. “This village… It will never change, will it?”
“What do you mean by that?”
Kakashi held his gaze through the mask and said nothing. He would let the man wonder, let it weigh heavily on his mind. He would let the Hokage wonder why the most loyal ninja in Konoha defected, and what led up to it. He would let him wonder, and never tell him the truth.

Kakashi leaned down to whisper in Naruto’s ear once more.
“I’ll tell you this much, Naruto.” He said, and Naruto finally went quiet. “Jiraiya here is your godfather. After your parents died, he left the village. He decided that he didn’t want you. Your parents named you after a character in his book, and he still couldn’t step up and raise you like you deserved to be.”
Naruto went silent. Jiraiya looked over at them, furious. “What are you telling him, Kakashi?”
Kakashi glared at him. “Someone tried to get custody of you after the death of your parents. That person was personally denied by the third Hokage, who issued a warrant for that person to stay away from you. You were wanted, Naruto, but that person wasn’t allowed to have you.”
Naruto whispered his response. “Who was it?”
A beat passed before Kakashi spoke. “It was me.” He confessed, and Naruto gasped, tears welling in his eyes. “But one day, we will capture you, and you won’t survive. So I’m sorry, Naruto. I truly am.”

Tobi let out a breath. “That boy you swore it on. Your friend.” He said, and his voice was shaking . “Do it again.”

Sasuke walked to Kakashi and Kisame with his team following behind.
Sasuke stepped up to him, just a few meters from Kakashi. He glared at him, right and into his soul, but Kakashi didn’t have one right now. Kakashi’s little brother was about to get killed.

It was still and cold. Two words that described both Kakashi and the Mountain’s Graveyard. Obito remembered digging up clay when he was trapped inside and making figures of himself, Kakashi, and Rin. He’d use a Katon no Jutsu to fire them, and when Madara broke them because he wasn’t training, he’d just make more.
But this wasn’t the time to play with clay dolls. It was the time to grieve, mourn, cry, and regret, because Obito had far too many regrets. Now was the time to take action, to destroy the world, and to resume plans for the Infinite–
I need to kill everyone and then myself. I need to burn it all down, take everyone with me, and get revenge for him. It’s all for him.
“I’ll get you buried, Bakakashi, I promise. Your grave might not be fancy, but I’ll visit you every day.” Obito sniffled, then wiped his nose with a grin, just like the ones from his childhood. “Just like you did for me.”
“I’m sorry, Kashi,” Obito sobbed, shoulders shaking. He rested his forehead on his knees, feeling like he was twelve years old. “I’m so sorry I got you killed. I’m sorry I couldn’t bring you back. You’re my best friend, and this is one of the worst things to happen but I– I wish you wouldn’t have died today. Why was it today?” Obito bowed his head like a dog to his master. “Tomorrow’s the day we lost Rin.”
Kakashi didn’t respond. He was dead. Obito picked up Kakashi’s hand and pressed his lips to his knuckles.
