    Pathologically solitary academic Chu Wanning left behind a life of research to enlist with the Pan-Pacific Defense Corps Jaeger team when giant monsters began to emerge from the Pacific ocean, eager to leave his personal entanglements behind him and join humanity's collective battle against the threat of extinction.

    His goal is to build an artificial intelligence that will allow a pilot to operate a Jaeger mech solo - eliminating the need for pilot compatibility and the mortifying ordeal of being totally known by another person, a "neurological handshake" known colloquially as the drift.

    He didn't expect his former students to follow him all the way to front line of the war against the kaiju.

    Featuring lots of side character interaction, pining, yearning, questions on the nature of personhood, friendship between jerks, people coping badly with loss, snarky AI, and giant robots. Illustrations by Saika & Daru

    “In my defense,” Tianlang-jun says as he elegantly lowers himself to sit cross-legged on the floor of the Holy Mausoleum, “I’ve never brought anyone back from the dead before. As far as complications go, this is relatively manageable. Wouldn’t you agree?”

    The question is directed towards a young child swimming in black robes far too elaborate and spacious for his minuscule size. The child simply blinks his big, dark eyes in response. It’s a familiar mannerism, and one that has only gotten cuter amidst accidental age regression.

    Tianlang-jun brings Zhuzhi-lang back to life. It doesn't quite go as planned.

What good was a strategist who couldn’t keep up with the men he ordered around? What good was a teacher who couldn’t demonstrate anything he taught to his students?

    What good was a cultivator who couldn’t fucking cultivate?

    Shen Qingqiu manages to save Liu Qingge's life in the Lingxi Caves at the expense of his own cultivation and immortality. Now condemned to a short, brutish life as a mortal again, Shen Jiu chooses to leave it all behind and eke out a small living while he can, aware that death could be at his door any day now.

    After all, what else does he have to live for?
