Ilya couldn’t help it, gently collecting the small girl into his arms as she easily wrapped her arms around his neck. She was so light, lighter than she should be for a five year old, and yet the burden she carried had nearly weighed her down just as easily. “Yes,” Irina frowned. “…Who is this?”
“Ah. It’s… Ilya,” her fucking uncle said. Her uncle, who she hadn’t spoken to since she was seven years old. “Ilya Rozanov,” as if that needed clarifying.
When the trust that Ilya set aside for his niece, Irina, becomes available to her at eighteen, Ilya speaks to her for the first time in twelve years. It changes a lot of things, for the both of them.

His chest tightens. His breathing gets shallow. He hates this part. The moment when the past stops being something he remembers and starts being something he feels.

There’s a long pause. Then Ilya exhales shakily and adds, quieter now, almost breaking,
“But I can’t leave her alone.”
