The headline splashes across his screen, along with a familiar picture from last season of #71 mid-shot, Alex’s usually stony game face cracked by the hint of a smile, like he knew the shot was going to find the back of the net before it even left his stick. Bobby remembers Julie coming into practice the day after that game with the picture on her phone to show them. Apparently, Alex is a hard guy to get a good shot of during games, so this one has stuck around.
Bobby just likes that Alex looks happy in it. Hopefully he’s happy now, finally being back.

They never really said the words aloud, since the phrase carried an insinuation that they weren't even remotely interested in, but getting to curl up in bed beside the love of their life and doze off in his arms was one of Willie's favorite parts of their shared life. Carly groans and heads for the stairs. She sees a bunch of guys zipping around in lavender and white sweaters on the ice, a handful of other people hanging around the edges and calling out directions every so often. Phantoms practice then. Carly does like watching the games on TV with Jaden (and in person the one time Willie had gotten the whole family tickets as a present last season) but the pain in her gut takes the appeal out of standing on the hard rubber floor.
She stumbles a little as she makes her way into the main women’s bathroom. Thankfully it’s empty. The knot of pain in her abdomen loosens when she finally sits down on a toilet and lets the muscles relax. It’s almost…

“So I don’t know if you remember me telling Reggie this,” Julie continues as they enter her bedroom, “but a lot of times popular music will get on there and it’ll start trends and stuff.”
Alex nods, unsure as to where this is going. A part of him wonders if it has to do with their debut album, which was released publicly less than two weeks ago and has been exploding all over the place, but that seems like something Julie would show to Luke first, or all three of them together. Why would she single him out for album stuff?
“So that kinda happened with Finally Free,” Julie tells him, sitting down on her bed and flipping open her laptop.
Alex’s dead heart stops. Because that’s his song. His bandmates helped him bring it to life and everyone out in the world likely thinks about it as Julie’s since she sings it, but he wrote it.

Whether it was huge things, like Pride events and screaming from the sides of mountains, or little things like being gently shaken awake from a nightmare and a warm blanket when he got home from band practice in the winter, Willie was constantly changing Alex’s universe into something far more beautiful than he ever dreamed of. From the very schedule he lived by to the way he saw the world, Alex couldn’t think of a single part of his existence that hadn’t been changed for the better by his lover.

That’s where Alex sees him. Sitting with his legs crossed on a chair. Alex’s immediate thought is: the man is fucking gorgeous.
He has blonde hair that curls in patterns across his head, soft blue eyes and a full, pink mouth that he pulls between straight white teeth. There’s faint freckles across his cheekbones, little dots across pale skin, a mole just above where his lip ends. Alex feels like his brain has short-circuited.
Alex is a hockey player who unfortunately sprains his ankle a month before the season. Henry works in the nurse’s receptionist office. They meet over injuries and light touches, a love story waiting to happen.

Henry took a deep breath. He placed the coffee mug on the desk and strode across the room. He was slightly interrupted by David’s yelp, but after nudging the dog to the side, he pulled Alex into a tight hug. Alex clung to him like a lifeline.
“It’s not stupid,” Henry murmured into Alex’s shoulder. “I promise it’s not.”
