Obviously he’s not going to give John the satisfaction of asking about him, but all he hears is how complete John’s life is with David in it, and how John only wants to share his bed with David from now on. Turns out David is a cat, but Paul doesn’t know that.

Yellow is the sun, bright and big in the sky. It’s the color of the cat that sits in the garden and the daffodils that grow in the grass that the cat likes to stretch out on. It’s the color of the walls at his auntie’s house and the color of the little sweets he likes so much. Most importantly, yellow is the color of the dress his mum likes to wear. She tells him this with a sweet voice, petting his hair, pointing out everything in the room that’s yellow.

Paul waved a hand over John's eyes, then snapped twice, enough to startle him— John didn't budge. Not even after Paul touched and gently pulled at a strand of hair (to test his awareness, of course).
Retreating, Paul felt another smile rise. Though they'd stayed at each other's frequently nowadays, he'd never known John talked in his sleep.

Paul still had that dreadful little moustache, his dark hair curling over his collar, but he looked good. Relaxed, a bit sunburned. Annoyingly fucking fit, if John was being very honest with himself, which he was really trying to be, these days.
"Paul and Linda were going to New Orleans to record the Venus and Mars album," May recalled. "And John found out they would be there. He made plans to surprise them down there. He was in a great mood and he really missed Paul."

Marianne threw her head back and laughed. All the provincial lads she'd met had, for the most part, defied every stereotype she'd been brought up to believe in; but then there was Paul, thick as a plank when it came to the ways of the world. Marianne had no doubt that he was a genius. She also sometimes felt she'd never met any boy stupider -- in a crowded field, as always, Paul excelled.

In no time at all, the older man has John suddenly arriving to class on time and showing greater interest in his work. And the flood of inspiration arrives just in time for the weekend of his art showcasing.

Thick-rimmed glasses high on his nose, he studies the threadlike arch of his eyebrows and scruffiness of his chubby cheeks. Line by line, he gives life to a black-and-white replica of the man posed in the middle of the room. Twice, their eyes meet over the beechwood frame of his easel and John has to ensure that the dip in his stomach didn’t find its way onto the paper as a glaring smudge.
