Phainon had witnessed many confessions—from people around him, in gossip he’d heard, in stories he’d read… but he never imagined that the one directed at him would come in the form of such a statement—
“My dad says you’ll ruin my family’s company.”
He looked at Mydei, who was holding his hand, eyes gleaming with one part sincerity, two parts curiosity, three parts playfulness, and four parts exhilaration—and at the ring resting atop the hand-carved soldier figurine that had been started by one and finished by another in Mydei’s hand, reflecting the skyglow of Aedes Elysiae. In that instant, twenty years’ worth of memory fragments—the sunset over wheat fields, a long-healed scar on his chest that suddenly burned anew, lyrics on a phone screen, the roar of fighter jets—threatened to burst through the floodgates. After the reel of memories flashed through his mind, he finally replied:
“But what is destroyed can also be rebuilt. Isn’t Kremnos Corporate better now than it was before?”
Mydei grinned and planted one fierce kiss after another on him. “Of course! I’m way better than Eurypon!”

Phainon, whom he thought he’d lost after the brutal battle for the Coreflames. Phainon, now acquired the title of Worldbearing, obtained the blessing of Kephale, and had been ready to sacrifice himself for this godforsaken world.
His omega—one of the last left—whom Mydei had done everything for, to give him a reason to live. To stay.
Mydei stepped closer, heart stuttering at the soft inhales from those petal-pink lips. He knelt just outside the nest, the last piece of privacy he could still offer Phainon.
“Phainon, I'm home.”
