Summary
She gets her scrubs off and a pair of sweatpants on. When Frank calls to her, “We don’t have shells, is spaghetti okay?” her entire night is rocked, her body reacting before her brain can at the subtle change. The request would be perfectly normal for any other person, but it leaves Mel shirtless because her executive functioning gave up, her sport’s bra squeezing tight around her chest as the panic sets in. Her body settles into nothing but upset, and her lungs start shaking with tears that won’t fall. “Mellie?”
As soon as the bedroom door falls open, Frank finds her standing at the edge of the bed half dressed, a shaking hand to her mouth as she tells her body, it’s fine, you’re fine.
When Mel finally breaks after her shift, Frank is there to remind her it's not stupid that it's over a bowl of pasta.

Summary
She tried to steady her breathing, to calm her racing heart, but her blood was boiling, bubbling under her skin, angry and fast. She was sweating, and the sweat dripping off her forehead itched, and her clothes felt too tight and the fireworks kept booming and she couldn’t calm down. Everything was moving without her, her heart pounding without permission, the sweat running down her temple, her whole body rocking, back and forth, without meaning to. Fireworks boomed and the bugs chirped and Becca was watching fireworks somewhere without her. Laughing with her boyfriend, talking to his parents, Mel didn’t even get an invite.

Summary
By the end of the shift, he found Mel near the nurses’ station. She was ready to go home. Somehow she was still flipping through a chart, quieter than usual. The edge taken out of her in a way that had nothing to do with exhaustion. Just... worn down.
The voice in the back of Langdon’s head told him that he’d promised the kids he’d be home early. Fireworks, barbecue, and the whole thing. But they could wait. They had him all the time.
Mel didn’t. Not today.

Summary
It’s fucking crazy of her. She stands there with hay stuck to the knees of her scrub pants, her mouth drawn into a thin line, and her eyes two icy shards of fury in her face. She looks like an avenging angel, all beautiful, righteous anger, backlit by the sun streaming through the square window. If it were anyone else, Frank is pretty sure Travis would have pulled the trigger.
But Mel has always bent the rules of the universe, so Travis just nods meekly and tucks his gun into the waistband of his jeans.
Or: Frank and Mel are kidnapped, and somehow it's the most romantic thing ever.
