Ranma Saotome does not believe in soulmates.
Almost as though the universe is trying to spite him, in his world, your soulmate, the expected to be "love of your life" is assigned to you on the year of your 20th birthday. Various people have found their other half and are now happily married or on the path to 'true love'.
Ranma definitely does NOT believe in soulmates.
And yet, here he is. Nervously awaiting for midnight to strike so he can see who his soulmate is. It's foolish, he tells himself. Still, he would really prefer it if his soulmate turned out to be his current girlfriend, and not some random stranger he never met.
But fate is never that kind.

Xiao looks at him, startled. It takes a moment before something like sullen understanding crosses his face. It’s resigned in a way Venti never is. “Sorry. You should get earplugs. I can’t control it.”
Venti is no good with sadness. It sits in him like a dead weight. He does whatever he can to push it out. "I don’t think those will really help,” Venti says with a laugh.
“The roommate swap is next week. I wouldn’t hold it against you if you left. My roommate last year did the same thing.”
Oh, shit.
Now he can’t leave.
