    Summary

Etho looks lonely. That's all Bdubs can come up with. There, halfway down the alleyway, surrounded by piles of zombie bodies, face smeared with flesh and poison, mask and hair drenched in sweat, Etho looks lonely. He turns, dragging his sword after him, arms shaking, and meets Bdubs' gaze.

He makes a strangled noise in the back of his throat, something animal and fearful, and Bdubs runs to catch him before he collapses. Another grief-stricken noise escapes Etho's throat and he stumbles forward into Bdubs' arms, head against the bell of Bdubs' throat. He's sobbing, dripping tears down Bdubs' shirt, chest heaving with every breath he takes that threatens to tear him apart. He clutches at Bdubs' back, nails sharp and tearing into Bdubs' shirt, some desperate scramble for control.

"I love you," he says again, like a broken record. His voice breaks. "I love you. I'm sorry. I know you're tired."

    ==

This is not about Etho. This is not about Bdubs. This is not about love, that old corpse. This is just about the apocalypse.

Devastating. In a lonely way. In a way that makes me think of love, and what it leaves behind. It’s an old building, and I don’t think I can leave.

    Summary

    My contribution to MerMay.

Will was just trying to keep his head low and his bills paid. The job at the Research Center for Ocean Life was easy, quiet, and it kept food in his belly. Everything was going well until he saw something in the Deep Sea enclosures he couldn't explain.

    **

His sneakers slid across the soap, making him windmill his arms and for a moment, the safety training video he’d watched a few weeks prior played on a loop in his head, scolding him for not wearing no-slip shoes.

“No. Nope. No fucking way,” he panted through chattering teeth as he found his footing and leaned his back against the door.

He kept his eyes locked on the enclosure, waiting for the light to show up again or for his mind to come up with a better explanation than there was a fucking alien in a tank less than a hundred feet away from him. He waited almost half an hour before he found his nerve and crept back to retrieve the mop. He didn’t bother to clean the glass, justifying it with the lack of time he had left in his shift rather than the queasy feeling in his stomach and uncomfortable, primal fear of being confronted with something he had no logical explanation for.

Fuck me sideways this was beautifully done. Incredibly bittersweet and I fear it’ll remain seated within my heart for a very long time to come.

    Summary

It's lovely up here; all meadows dotted with wildflowers, wind-beaten tracks criss-crossing this way and that through the fields, weaving inland to the pinewoods. The sun's hot on his back as he passes ramshackle stone walls, long since crumbled to piles of ancient rubble and scree, and then the path winds downwards, still following the line of the coast until Sirius finds himself outside an old white cottage, tucked away behind the hill with a rose garden that faces out to the sea.

Sirius moves to Cornwall for the summer and meets a rude, beautiful boy who is writing a book that may or may not be about dragons.

Quite possibly one of the sweetest things I’ve ever read. There are honest to god tears in my eyes and a warm lump in my chest. I’ll return to this sometime on a rainy afternoon curled up in bed with a cup of something warm.

    Summary

“Kim,” you say, and he blinks at you in the middle of putting out his hand. “There’s something fucked up going on.”

“You must be from the 41st. I’m Lieutenant Kim Kitsuragi—though you seem to know that already.” He seems tense, for some reason—and his hand is still out. “I’m afraid I wasn’t told who you are.”

“It’s me, Harry! Kim, don’t you remember me? Fuck, there’s something really wrong happening.”

“If you’re referring to the dead body that has been hanging from a tree for seven days—then yes, I agree. It is pretty wrong.” Kim is looking at you with his mouth slightly pursed. There’s no recognition in his eyes—he looks at you like you’re a stranger.

“This can’t be happening." Kim clears his throat.

“You are clearly going through… something. But I would appreciate it if we could focus on the case for the moment.”

“Oh my god,” you say. “We did it already, Kim, but for some reason I’m the only one who remembers! This is some—some cosmic joke from the universe, I’ll tell you that.”

“Okay,” Kim says, slowly. “I’m going to give you a moment while I talk to the manager. You’re going to sit down and sort out whatever it is you’re doing. And then we’re going to take down that corpse.”

Maybe in Night Vale, where everything else works a little bit wrong, love works a little wrong too. Maybe in Night Vale, where time occasionally stands on end and gravity pulls slightly less than usual every second Thursday, someone like Cecil, a love like Cecil's, could come without any strings attached at all.

    Bookmarker's Notes

OH I KNOW YOU! Beautiful work, as always by this author, who has perhaps just always been my favourite author. But the way this was written was fantastic, even the radio segments sounding like they genuinely could just be in an episode of nightvale. And the way they write Cecil and Carlos <33 absolutely stunning
