Summary
One thing about living in a small apartment with someone is you quickly start to learn them in very specific, intimate ways.
Beatrice has certainly been learning about Ava.
There’s dozens of small things that crop up here and there, all of which slowly start to fill in the hidden gaps in the picture that is Ava in Beatrice’s mind.

When she got back to the apartment, it was nearing mid-afternoon. It would be just enough time to have everything ready by the time Ava’s shift ended at six.
Except, when Beatrice turned the key in the lock, she knew immediately that the apartment was not empty. An unfamiliar sound was coming from their bedroom.
Beatrice set the grocery bags down, managing to avoid anything more than the softest crinkle of brown paper as they hit the countertop. The floorboards, normally old and creaky, were silent beneath her feet. She reached for the knife on her back, fingers wrapping around the handle as she got to the door, open just enough for Beatrice to peak inside and –

Summary

You see it - clearly, often - the way people fall in love with her.
Beatrice is perfect: a strategist, a badass, a gift. She enthralls unknowingly, charms with that startling combination of manners and poise and kindness and sincerity that leaves so many blinking, breathless. You’re supposed to be incognito and she reminds you of this at every turn but you kinda want to shake her and point out that the trail of heart eyes she leaves in her wake is the least incognito thing ever.

In which Beatrice keeps landing herself in precarious and life-threatening slash embarrassing situations during her probation period for the OCS; Ava is her clumsy but adorable guardian angel who is new to the job, keeps showing up whenever Bea is in distress, and clearly has no idea what she’s doing half the time. Early mornings, when pink and orange filtered through the corners of their makeshift window curtains, the sunrise glinting off a bit of drool on the corner of Ava’s lip that made her ache; drops of sweat lining her temples after an afternoon training session; all of her smiles and all of her soft, second-nature touches that would send Beatrice to her knees, door locked behind her in their tiny, leaking bathroom, begging for reprieve or repentance…
