Crawl into my bed like it’ll make it any better?”

Henry stood up. “Forget the tea,” he said with the same steel in his voice that Graham always had when he forced Henry to do his exercises, “We’re going to the parlour.”

She hadn’t gone home with any of them, of course. She never does. That honor is saved for Henry alone, has been for years, since before they’d become Fitzjames-and-Le-Vesconte both on the ice and off. Inseparable, inevitable. The media likes to speculate, of course, but they don’t know the half of it. They don’t know the way he’ll usher her up the stairs to their shared flat at the end of the night, dutifully gathering the clothing she sheds like second skin between the front door and her bedroom, laying out a glass of water and a tablet of ibuprofen for the morning. They don’t know the way he’ll smooth down her hair so it doesn’t tangle up against the pillow, the way he’ll kiss her forehead for a heartbeat too long once he’s sure she’s asleep.

Edward swallows, parts his cracked lips. “Henry,” he says, then pauses. His fingers trace the chain, the still-healing puncture wound where Henry had pressed the needle through his bottom lip. It aches.
“Henry,” he tries again, firmer this time. “Henry Le Vesconte, cause of death—”
“Starvation,” says the voice, Henry’s voice. Edward sucks in a breath, holds it until his chest aches.
Edward Little is saved from the shale. Henry Le Vesconte, presumed dead, haunts him.

As he looks around, his first thought is that Henry is gone. To do what, Ned doesn’t know, but it isn’t exactly abnormal for the other man to take off with no warning. Sometimes to hunt, other times to check the tent or watch the horizon for the mutineers.
So Ned doesn’t worry about it, not immediately.
Not until he notices the lumpy shape behind the tent flap, the sun casting the shadow of it through and across the ground.
