Summary
Luz eyes her roommate with a blend of suspicion and confusion. In a way, she really should’ve seen this coming; the flash of green she thought she saw in the café was the first clue that one of her many failed friendships was attending Hexside too, but the pricey room conveniently given to Luz of all people should’ve slapped her in the face immediately.
It takes her a moment to speak, and when she does, her voice is cold and distant.
“Still she/her, yeah?”
Amity mumbles “… yeah.” as a response in an uncharacteristically-small voice.
“Well, who am I to stop you?” Luz mutters as she holds the door open for the other girl.

Of all the ways he could've lost her — ground into sand by that ear-splitting grinder, tossed to the train's wheels, trapped forever behind that barrier in the door that rippled like the water in the puddles — he never would have imagined this.
But no, she's not lost. She's right here, close enough to touch and yet light years out of his reach.

It actually worked. Reflecting Jesse's number in her hand, they watched as two nearly identical doors opened in the air. Two portals side by side. One showing the sun setting over a peaceful lake lined by pines, the other showing a sparse forest, the sky dark with the moon hanging high overhead and a small stream glittering in the distance. They were leaving, but they weren't leaving together.
Lake made a promise. She swore to Jesse that she would find him, and that was exactly what she was going to do.
This was going to be a lot easier said than done, wasn't it?

Luz's knees had been giving out since she was a kid. It was almost like the weight of her emotions was tangible on her body. Any strong enough emotion knocked her off her feet and she'd always hated it. She hated not being able to pull herself back to her feet.
