With a quick check on the librarian--she was still arguing, the snark in her tone becoming thicker the angrier she got--Knuckles closed the door and went to the closet. Pulling those doors open, he went to his knees and pulled a little box toward him.
Inside were a few things he'd worked on in secret. It was nothing objectionable, but these were things that were special to him, and in his time on his own in the galaxy, running from bounty hunters and evading capture for the arenas, he'd learned to keep anything that was important hidden away. If people knew something held value to you, they tried to take it from you.

Miles toed the ground with the tip of his shoe, eyes downcast as he studied the traces through the dirt. Around him his unlikely friend gathered the few items they found to take with him on the next leg of his quest. A tightness tugged at his chest as he watched his new found companion prepare to depart, leaving him alone once again.
Miles cleared his throat softly, causing the older boy to stop his movements and look at the small kit.
"Is there something you need, fox?"
Miles swallowed hard, moving his eyes to look up toward the boy's face. He worried his lower lip as he tried to gain the courage he would need to ask his question. Intense purple orbs continued to study his small frame, making the tightness increase.
"Umm." he stuttered, pulling his hands back behind his back. "What if...I mean...would it be possible if..." Miles stopped, taking a deep breath to find his courage. "Could I come with you?"

How would things change if Knuckles and Tails met before their fated trip to Earth? A world where two companions met in different circumstances. A story of companionship, angst, and unlikely friends with a bit of adventure thrown into the mix.
