'Why are you sorry?' Thimble tilted her tiny head to show confusion. 'I mean, it worked out great for us. Got right through those alarms no problem and now you can do what you want with just us in here. It would be different if I’d tried to like, buy a ticket, and they wouldn’t let me, but I can just fly over the ticket counters anyways.'
That earned her a chuckle. 'It is useful, and of course I’d rather us be alone, but I’d also rather you not be a useful object.’"
Or, the first time they were alone, Thjazi tied Bolaire up and left Thimble to make sure he didn’t interfere with their heist. She stared down and wondered why this odd mask was any different from the vicious body he wore. This story is three short scenes of how they became friends.

Mimzy missed when she and Alastor were the strange little duo traversing the streets of Lousianna, smiles plastered on their faces and false confidence in both of their strides. She missed the soft, small smiles that were saved only for his mother and herself, the ones that didn’t stretch from ear to ear and show sparkling teeth. The ones that faded when he slept and didn’t immediately plaster themselves on his face again when he woke, groggy, in the morning.
After his fight with Vox, his skin crawling from all the recent touching, Alastor goes to find a familiar face.

Charlie cut herself off with a startled hiccup at the sound of exploding glass. She and Angel stared at the television set, green smoke billowing out of its now-broken screen. Then they turned their attention to Alastor, who stood on the other side of the parlor. His smile was placid, but his shadow writhed, and his cane was glowing.
"One down!" he said cheerfully. Then, beckoning to the staircase, he said to Angel, "Care to lend me a hand with the rest of them, my good fellow?"
It only took a few more seconds for Angel to overcome his shock. "Oh," he said, cracking all three pairs of knuckles, "fuck yeah."

The staff at the coffeeshop have dozens of rumors about the masked man and the handsome actor who come by once a week to discuss literature. Most of these rumors involve the two of them in some kind of passionate romantic entanglement.
Briar (part-time barista, full-time college student) is pretty sure they're not entangled, because when the depth of somebody's longing is recognizable on a mask with fairly limited facial expressiveness, it's clear he hasn't said a word about his feelings.

He complains to a chorus of wheezing from Halandil and mildly alarming giggling from Bolaire as he slips out of the living room and into the kitchen to hunt down the Lloy family's pantry, eat their snacks, and note down how his undead body reacts to those snacks.
