Prince Timothy Drake-Wayne knew what was expected of him, to fade into the background among his siblings. He knew he was loved but the people would never accept him on the Throne, not that he wanted it. His future had changed in the course of one unexpected battle. His survival was a miracle and his family loved him, no matter what.
He never wanted to see battle again, but he still felt horrible when his siblings and Father rode off to fight against the hordes of Pariah Dark and the Infinite Kingdom. So the sudden silence and lack of attacks for two years were a wonderful break, a time when he didn't have to worry about them coming home wounded or worse.
And then the letter arrived. Pariah Dark had been deposed, somehow. And now, the newly crowned High Chief demanded negotiations, supposedly for peace. But they knew the truth. On occasion, Radovid sends him away to bestow his services on nobles who aren't stationed at court. During one such trip Jaskier witnesses the murder of a noble he was supposed to be pleasing, and sees the faces of the assassins; to keep him from identifying them to the authorities, Jaskier is taken with them when they leave, and finds himself held in the royal palace of Rivia. Life in Rivia is anything but what Jaskier would have expected and both the king of Rivia and his right hand are unlike any nobles Jaskier has ever known; the more time he spends with them, the more he realizes that they might just be what they seem to be—good men.

The Juistria League - the alliance of the major countries of the continent Juisitria - has long since stood for peace.
Unfortunately there is one country that is a thorn in their side whenever they try to solidify that peace: The Infinite Lands, a country of barbarians to the north where the only reason they survive is the magic in the air. Where the magic is so strong that even children develop a talent, which they themselves call "the blessings of the dragons".
The country that, last time the Juistria League had tried to negotiate, had waged a war more brutal then anything seen before on them, for over a decade - right until the moment a rebellion caged him. Not long ago, his murderer took the title.
And now, that very same newly crowned High Chief demands negotiations of them.
