She had feared them dulled, like those of the Noldor Galadriel had told her of when her mother could not hear, who had entered the Helcaraxë with her and her kindred but had not made it to the other side. Who had perished, though the ice never opened its gaping maw beneath them. Who had met their end with a tired smile, bloodless lips and frost in their lashes.

The night was nearing its blackest, and he knew Arien set sail here long before she woke them in Beleriand.
“Not yet,” he said.
Sometimes, late at night, Elrond and Elros share a dream of white shores, a path through the woods and a Cottage at the end of it - and of a woman, who keeps insisting that she is their mother, who drowned long ago. Obviously, as Elros likes to remind his twin, she has to be lying.

“What do you mean what happened?”
“I just…” Jonathan’s eyes flicked up past Steve at the sound of the backdoor creaking open. “Mom.”
Steve turned to see Mrs. Byers’ in the doorway with a glass of water and a bottle of something. Probably the painkillers she’d promised. She gave him a matching look of concern and confusion, although she was quicker to conceal it.
He started to feel hot and embarrassed with the reaction he was getting. It hadn’t been meant to slow anything down, let alone draw everyone’s eyes to his bare chest. He leaned down to grab his soaking wet shirt off the back steps, although it was really just an excuse to look down and away from everyone’s gazes.
Mrs. Byers’ put out a hand as if to tap him on the shoulder and then drew it back like she was worried about hurting him.
“Steve, honey, you can borrow one of Jonathan’s shirts."

So he phones his shit in too if they’re not going to care. He spends a lot of time tracing the words carved into his desk absently, or staring out the windows now. He tries to get a seat closer to them, the windows, when he can, which is most classes except his English one. Mrs Woodcliff assigns seats alphabetically, and probably always has, far as Dustin can tell — there’s an SH WAS HERE!! carved into his desk in that class. He puts his notebook over that one, sits on his hands to stop reaching.
One afternoon, in December, Dustin and Erica work on their character sheets.
