Summary
He mutters, "I'm not letting go until you tell me what you're going to do when you've crossed state lines."
"I told you," Robby huffs, "Beer. Hot apple cider. Maybe a chicken pot pie on the porch of some good Samaritan who takes pity on me."
"Yeah? Chicken pot pie?" Jack hums, raising his eyebrows, receiving an affirming nod from the other. "Gonna go on a stereotypical-ass spirit journey? That's what you're going to do, Michael? That's the reason you hugged me like that? Like you were savoring it?"

And Michael Robinavitch would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for Jack Abbot.

Summary
“Say you got married,” Robby found himself asking. “Would you wear your dress blues? Or civilian clothes?”
It had only been an idle thought, no different than any number of easy, directionless musings of the sort that often came over the two of them on mornings like this one, when no one had a shift to go to for at least thirty-six hours. Robby didn’t mean anything by it. But he regretted the words the instant they left his mouth, even before he saw the incredulous grin slide over Jack’s face.

Summary
The first pops sound when Jack is coming back down from CT. He's in the stairwell—he hates the confines of the elevator unless he's having a bad leg day—and he's immediately on high alert. He slides to the side, crouching low and pressing up against the inside wall so he'd be just out of sight to anyone coming up the stairs. It limits his field of vision, but he needs a moment to assess, and he wouldn't be able to see anything anyway. The sound was too far away to be localized in the stairwell.
He waits for what feels like an eternity, his breath caught in his throat, and then he hears the first scream.
