    Summary

There was very little gentleness in most of Arthur's physical interactions. He was a warrior, but even outside of that, his role as a leader meant that by necessity he had to maintain a certain distance and decorum that contained a different kind of violence. Sometimes he wondered if the safety of that distance was worth the ache of isolation.

Or: 5 times Arthur noticed Merlin using his gentle hands to tend to his knights and one time Merlin took care of Arthur himself.

    Summary

"I'm certain this is not what you wanted from a marriage any more than I did."

For a second, Joe is on the receiving end of the most intense stare he's ever seen. He almost dares to hope for an argument, something unexpected, then his husband blinks, and he's back to being that blank-faced stranger Joe first met earlier that day. "On the contrary. An advantageous match is all a prince should ever want."

It was too much to hope that Nicolò might possess wit or charm that he felt free to express behind closed doors. Joe tries to hide a sigh. On the bright side, he thinks, at least it's forever.

    Summary

But none of that seemed to matter any more, not now, not when red rivers were streaming through the grass under Merlin, the steady flow of it unending and eternal.

Merlin’s breath’s were coming in shallow gasps, stuttering and shaking as he stared at the treetops high above them. His skin, which had always been pale, was now ashen and grey, white as freshly fallen snow.

“No,” Was that Arthur’s voice? No, it couldn’t be. His voice had never sounded so small, so terrified. “No, no, don’t do this to me Merlin. You can’t die. You idiot, why would you jump in front of me?”

Merlin’s eyes, still as brilliantly blue as ever, turned to him now.

“He was going to kill you. I had to save you.” Merlin said it like it was the most obvious thing in the world, like a servant should always dive in the way of a sword for his master.

    ---

Merlin, like always, tries to sacrifice himself for Arthur. But this time, he succeeds. Arthur is left to pick up the aftermath, as Merlin dies in his arms.

    Summary

Arthur is attempting to make peace with the kingdoms of Albion, and if that means having to spend most of winter holed up in a castle in the North freezing his backside off, then so be it. The king in question is eager to make peace, and offers up tokens of his good will, including access to his bedwarmers (read: harem). On the way there. they meet a servant with a distinct lack of respect for, well, anyone, and he is far more interesting to Arthur than any woman could hope to be. There's something mysterious behind the cheeky smiles and cryptic comments, and Arthur is determined to figure it out, even if it means bringing him back to Camelot at the end of winter.
