Zoe’s laughter is infectious. It wasn’t always. There’s a paragraph or two in the novel where the fictionalized version of Mio waxes poetic about how irritating Zoe’s laugh was when they first met. Mio’s laughter dies down first so she can listen to Zoe laugh without interruption. She exaggerated for the novel, of course. In reality, Mio has harbored a fondness for her friend’s laugh since they first met.
