“Then come see me,” Lance murmurs, and it makes Keith’s heart pound behind his breastbone. “Us, I mean. Once a week or something? Like mental health check-ins. We can just hang out, or...or go on low-priority, low-stress missions? Scouting, or flower-picking for Coran, or supply runs. Dumb stuff. Just...so we know how you are. I don’t want...I mean, we all miss you. And I don’t want to sound presumptuous, but...it feels like you’re not...not okay, Keith.”
Well, Keith thinks, a little weakly. He never really stood a chance, did he?
“Okay,” he says, right away. No fight. No refusal.
His life is a hell of a lot easier when he lets himself cave under all the ways he wants Lance's luminous attention, and company, and friendship. All the ways he wants Lance, full stop.

Keith looks between the children and the hat, too confused to glare, sweaty and horrid from pulling weeds beneath the scorching sun. “What?”
“That’s wrong,” Nadia complains, and yanks her brother down to her level to whisper the correction in his ear.
“Ooh,” Silvio amends. “Tía Veronica said you have a pale ass. My Abuela said you’re gonna die.”
OR
When Lance is fatally wounded during their final battle, the blue lion enters a deep hibernation with Lance inside. Unsure when or if he’ll wake, Keith is forced to wait and watch over him in the company of the people he fears most: Lance’s family.

“You were screaming,” Keith tells him. “I heard you through the wall.”
That wall, Lance wants to point out, is supposed to be soundproof. It shouldn’t let you hear anything, no matter how hard you listen. What he says instead is “I can’t breathe.”
“Take it slow.” Keith’s voice is steady, but as Lance’s eyes struggle to focus his face is a blur. The image goes shaky and then comes clear, shaky then clear, like looking into water. “Pretend it’s low tide. Tell me about the ocean again.”

Find My Friends is a misnomer, Liam thinks. Find The Scattered Remnants Of My Pack is more fitting but even that wouldn’t do much to explain why Theo R. is always the first name his eyes search for, memorizing the chimera as a point on a map, a set of ever-changing coordinates.
Liam can’t control all the leaving but he can control his not-knowing where.

“You got a haircut.”
Keith freezes, one arm halfway out of his coat sleeve. It’s the brown one with the plaid lining, the one that doesn’t match anything else he owns, but is too practical to get rid of. He pulls it off his other arm and holds it tight to his chest. Shakes his head.
“Not recently?”
Shiro frowns.
Keith dips forward and doesn’t shiver when curious fingers tangle in the hair at the back of his neck. Shiro’s palm feels large on the back of his skull as his fingers fist, gentle, into Keith’s hair, and then relax. He pulls them free, expression thoughtful. Keith watches through his bangs as he straightens up.
“Been like that for awhile,” he smiles, apologetic.
Shiro smiles back, tightness between his brows crumbling to an open kind of trust. “Huh. I must’ve… gotten mixed up.”

He puts Neil Josten to rest along with the memories of the Foxes. Locks the box containing the last year of his life up and tucks it back behind the thousands of other things he’s hidden from himself over the years. Another life left behind, another name and another story tucked away.
His father is dead, he’s going to tear everything he left behind apart. He’s won, hasn’t he? Done what his mother had always deemed impossible. He’s outlived the monster and he’s as free as he’ll ever be now.
Eyes shut on a hospital bed in the city he hates, Nathaniel is swallowed by his sorrow and his shoulders shake with a pain he will never be allowed to let go of.
