“Hey, uh,” Hajime clears his throat, trying to keep his lungs from collapsing like his sanity. “I don't know how to tell you this but, we… accidentally got the old surveillance cameras up and running somehow and, uh— I mean, I immediately turned the screen off but— um.”
There’s a stretch of radio silence on the other end that feels a bit too long again.
“Ah… haha, just my luck…” A slight wheeze in his laugh, and he’s a little breathless for reasons Hajime didn’t want to think about, but he didn't sound all that miserable.
“Right. So. Just wanted to let you know that I… can see you.” His mouth feels painfully dry just saying the words, “And h-hear you. In case you… wanted to, y’know, do something about that.”
“Oh,” Nagito answers like he simply forgot to water his plants for the evening, “So then... does Hinata-kun want me to stop?”
And there's the million-dollar question.

He can't stand that - the idea that Komaeda would be satiated without Hinata ever existing to him. It’s not much, he thinks, with everything he’s done. All he wants is one thing, something that he’s tried so hard to keep by his side. It must be justified, especially with how cruel Komaeda's been to him. Can’t he give him that? Just that? Can’t they repent together?

“I know about your pity invitations.” Hajime’s face twists when he says it, but Nagito plows on. “I mean, why am I still here with all of you and your shining futures? There’s nothing ahead of me. All I am is here, day after day. When will you get tired of that? When will the world get tired of me, of supporting someone so utterly useless?”
He reads the please don’t start with this in Hajime’s expression, and it only serves to make him spiral further. “Even now, I’m not doing what I should to support hope! My only chance to make something of my utterly useless life, and it was taken from me! What do I do now, Hajime? Just live?”
I don’t know how to live.

Without missing a beat, Komaeda brushes the dust from all those old televisions off of their jacket. "I told you, I'm fine..." they pout. Hinata fixes them with an incredulous stare. Komaeda huffs, too tired to keep pouting. Hinata's nature as a worrywart does get a little exhausting, after all. They don’t see what the big deal is. They’ve been through worse, haven’t they? Even if Hinata only means well, Komaeda still wishes that he would have a little more faith in them. "If it'll put your mind at ease, Hinata-kun," they say, "you can inspect my body for injuries yourself."
