Bookmarker's Notes
“Honestly, I have no idea who I’ll be,” he says, staring at his cold cup, the claw marks in the wood grain. “I’ve never thought about it. You know my mother died when she was 36? I’m 26 now. I’ll probably play for ten more years, if I’m lucky. Get a couple of Stanley cups. I’ll have to see Hollander four times a season, and that’ll be agony. Then I’ll be retired and I’ll never see him again. Somehow, that’s worse.”
Gritty makes a noise, a deep croon that seems to go on, achingly sad. Ilya didn’t even realize that Gritty knew that kind of sadness, but he should have guessed. This fuzzy orange monster is the personification of everyone that’s ever walked into the arena in a Flyers jersey. Of course he would know loss.
“But I have to break up with him,” Ilya says, and he knows that he’s mostly talking to himself. “I’m poison, and I destroy everything I touch. I’ll destroy him too. I couldn’t bear it, if I ruined him like everything else.”
The cup in his hands is blurry. Over the roaring in his ears, he hears a series of squeaks, and then he’s being lifted out of his chair and crushed against warm orange fur.
His first instinct is to shake Gritty off. He gets hugged every day, in celebration, in locker rooms. Shane holds him sometimes, when they’re catching their breaths and he’s tired enough to forget that he’s supposed to leave. But it’s not like this, full body and strong. Bizarrely, it makes him think of when he was a child, and his father still celebrated his wins.
He was just like this, larger than life in his childish eyes, except that instead of uniform buttons and the smell of cigarettes, there’s plastic decal and ozone and smoke.
Gritty starts to purr. The sound is loud enough to cover up Ilya’s hitched sobs.

“I wish I could call Ilya,” Shane lamented. “I need to actually memorize numbers. I’m a fucking idiot.”
“Wait. You haven’t called him? At all?”
“I had my mom call him so he knows I’m okay.” Shane replied.
“He’s in my text messages.”
“What? Really? Why?” Shane was stunned.
“Sometimes he messages me,” Hayden said. “I think Jackie gave him my number. I don’t know. He likes to troll me. I get shit like “You scored goal tonight. Is mercury in retrograde?”
Shane’s mouth fell open. He had no fucking idea.
“He’s saved in there as R.C.G.”
“What the fuck does that stand for?”
“Russian Chaos Goblin.”

Summary
Newly traded to the Ottawa Centaurs, Ilya Rozanov is so close to having everything he’d never thought he was allowed to want. He can see the man he loves more than four times a year, he’s surrounded by a team who supports him through his injury, and Shane’s parents have unhesitatingly accepted him as part of the family.
Except his lingering concussion symptoms have kept him sidelined from hockey, his boyfriend is still two hours away, their schedules are a disaster, and Shane’s team is, well…it’s full of assholes. There must be a way to make this all work out.

Bookmarker's Notes
“Give me your baby,” he commanded, holding out his arms. And even though Hayden had been the one to suggest it, he looked absolutely horrified that he was handing his child to Ilya Rozanov. Which...good. Ilya took the baby into his arms.
She was so small, her face almost featureless in that way babies’ faces sometimes were. Except her little face was scrunched up as she sniffled, and that was an awful thing to look at and an awful thing to feel. Wasn’t it mothers who were supposed to feel some visceral terror at the sound of a baby crying, even if the baby wasn’t theirs? Why the hell did Ilya feel it? He pulled the baby to his chest, rubbing her back.
“I know,” he told her softly in Russian, “I would also cry if my father was Hayden Pike. It must be terrible for you.”
The baby quieted, her little face settling into the crook of Ilya’s shoulder. Probably it was the cadence of Ilya’s words, even though she couldn’t understand them. Maybe the sound of Russian was soothing to little Canadian children. Maybe also because he was calmer than Hayden, who had been a bundle of weird nerves. Babies could probably also sense that, the same way animals could.
“Oh my God,” came Shane’s voice from the doorway where he stood with two wine glasses, one in each hand. His eyes were locked on Ilya with a kind of desperate longing. Hayden Pike was right. Shane definitely wanted babies, and he apparently had just learned to envision having them with Ilya.
Well. Ilya had no idea how they would make that happen—with their lives, with their careers, with everything. But it was very interesting information to see painted so clearly on his boyfriend’s face. Maybe Ilya should thank Hayden Pike for this.

Summary
Instead of Shane, it is Ilya who suffers a concussion during the Boston-Montreal game in April 2017. Dazed and agitated, Ilya briefly starts speaking and responding only in Russian and the medics can’t calm him down. Luckily, Shane started studying Russian after Ilya spoke to him in Russian on the phone from Moscow. For no particular reason. Certainly not because he’s fallen in love with Ilya Rozanov.
In Montreal with lingering concussion symptoms, Ilya is advised not to fly home for a few days, and the hospital won’t release him without assurances that he has someone to stay with him until his symptoms improve. Luckily, Shane conveniently has a condo in Montreal no one knows about and a few days before he has to travel again.
But Ilya’s symptoms don’t resolve after a few days. Which is okay; Shane can handle it. He can take care of Ilya, study Russian, lead his team into the playoffs, and keep Ilya’s continued presence in Montreal a secret. He can do everything, no problem. He is Shane Hollander after all.

Bookmarker's Notes
His head was filled with thoughts of Ilya. What he might have done differently to calm Ilya down sooner. What he would do if Ilya had sustained a spinal cord injury because he hadn’t acted quickly enough or studied Russian hard enough. Had Ilya’s pupil been dilated, or had that been Shane’s imagination? Was Ilya in surgery right now? Was he conscious? Was he still speaking in and responding only to Russian? Did the hospital have an interpreter who could help him if the entirety of the English language had been knocked out of his brain by the force of Comeau’s hit?
Hockey seemed like an absolute waste of time when anything could be happening to Ilya while Shane watched the two teams skate up and down the ice for a meaningless fucking game.
