For Freminet, taking the brunt of what he thought was an acid attack aimed towards Spina di Rosula's boss was nothing more than a split second decision. He wouldn't call himself a hero by any stretch of the imagination, and he wouldn't say he led his life with noble and virtuous intentions either...
...but when the urge to help someone comes to him, he ponders little over it. That's just what a good person would do, and Freminet desperately wants to be a good.
(Still, maybe he should have paid more attention to just what was being splashed.)
OR
Freminet dissolves into water. That really should have been the end of it, but it seems like the ocean wasn't keen on letting him go yet.

“Me?” He laughs, albeit incredulously. “Must be a boring one, then.”
A joke between Wriothesley and Clorinde lands them with a weekly advice column in the Steambird. While the submissions are anonymous, one particular letter, seemingly about Wriothesley, catches their eye – an ask for romantic advice. Clorinde moves on but Wriothesley connects the dots. He knows who wrote this letter but he can hardly believe it.

Wriothesley smiles and gestures to their surroundings with his free hand. “We’re not in the Fortress now, are we?”
“No…” Neuvillette says slowly. The corners of his mouth slowly curve upward into a surprisingly soft smile. “No we are not.”
After the events of 4.1 and Neuvillette's story quest, Wriothesley decides to make his feelings known to Neuvillette. He finds that they are not only not unwelcome, but reciprocated. Their relationship blossoms against the backdrop of Fontaine's impending crisis.

When Neuvillette learns how close Wriothesley came to being killed by the Primordial Sea, he finds his desire to care for the Melusines (diligently and from a safe emotional distance) has expanded to include the Duke of the Fortress of Meropide.
It’s not that odd. Neuvillette can do his best to help this particular human thrive, just like he’s done with the Melusines. It will help him better understand humans in general, which will help him better understand his purpose.
Surely he’s never going to have to think about it any more closely than that.

He feels light fingers graze against the injury on his neck, and fear flashes through his unfocused mind. He trashes and bares his teeth in a growl, the iron taste in his mouth clogging his senses as his injuries throb at the sudden movement.
The person retracts their hand for a second, before settling it against his bruised hand, "It's okay," his voice sounds strange, choked almost, "it's… it's alright. I'm here now."
