Shane put God on a back burner sometime between the ages of eleven and twelve. It was around that time that he barely stepped foot off the ice. His dad would joke that he was born with skates on, while his mother cursed out a grown man for a bad play. God, religion, faith came second to the rush of adrenaline as he flew on the ice.
It takes seventeen years and the love of his life being dead for twenty-eight minutes to relearn how to pray.

There’s a flash of what looks like fear that crosses Ilya's face before he sits back, his posture slightly closed off as his arms cross in front of his chest. “Depends on what it is,” he says, eyes somewhat steely.
She gets why people are intimidated by him on the ice.
“Why Ottawa?” She knows it’s something everyone has been asking, but she feels like it’s a legitimate thing to ask. “I mean, I get maybe you’re not happy in Boston, but you could have gone anywhere.”
“Not anywhere,” he says with an almost pout.
“But almost anywhere.”
He lets out a long breath of air through his nose. “I know it does not make sense, but it should not have to make sense to anyone but me.”
Kate tilts her head to the side, appraising him from across the table. “That’s not an answer.”
Ilya shrugs, but he holds her gaze steadily. “Maybe one day you will understand. But for now, know I am where I am supposed to be.”
And who is she to argue with that?

The danger is that Ilya has spent a lifetime perfecting the art of keeping things to himself, and Shane—with his empathy and his endless need to know—opens his mouth once and Ilya’s body spits out the truth before he can vet it first. Before he can make sure it’s safe. Not too much, not too vulnerable, not self-pitying, not a lie, but not necessarily the truth either. There is no just right when it comes to Shane. There is only impulse and hunger and, against every single fucking odd, a trust so deep that it’s in Ilya's blood now, helpless to pinpoint when it had first punctured and spread like a poison.
No. That isn’t right.
Like, maybe, the only antidote that Ilya has ever been offered without strings attached.

Once outside, he leaned forward and put his hand against the cold stone wall. His phone was still to his ear, the message still recording.
“Ilya. Please. Please. I can’t do this. I don’t know what to do. Please. You can’t be dead.” His voice broke on the word. “I love you. I love you so much. More than anything. I need to hear your voice. I need you to…I need you…I need you…fuck. Please Ilya, please.”
Shane took the phone away from his ear and held it between both hands as though he were praying. He realized he was on the floor and didn’t know how he got there. He was crying. He was fairly certain he was hyperventilating.
His brain was desperately trying to grab at anything. Any thread of logic. Any idea of what to do next.
I have to see him.
Yes. That made sense. Shane needed to get to Tampa. Now. He would go there. He would find Ilya. Ilya would be fine. They would be together. He would see him. Tell him how much he loved him. He had to go. He had to go now.

OR: What if Ilya lost his phone during the emergency landing, Shane couldn't reach him, he panicked, and chartered a plane to Tampa to find him instead...

“So, uh, I’m off,” Shane says from the other room. Ilya can hear his steps heading towards the door. Ilya remains in the bed, undressed and unmoved, staring blankly at the wall.
“Goodbye, Hollander,” is all he can say. Ilya hears the door click shut.
It didn’t even slam. It closed softly. Almost makes it worse. A few words and a soft click, and Hollander is gone.
“Fuuuck,” Ilya groans, teeth almost biting into the filter of his cigarette. We didn’t even kiss, Ilya thinks as he lets his head fall back against the headboard.
Or: Ilya is the one regretting they didn't even kiss.

It’s a simple thing, really.
Quiet. Easy. Steady.
When he was little, Maddie would take him down to the lake with a paper bag full of bread, mostly the odds and ends no one wanted, crusts, heels, stale slices.
But to the ducks, it was a feast.
They’d sit on the worn wooden bench near the shore, shoes kicked off, toes curled into the grass, and tear the bread into tiny pieces, tossing it into the water one by one. The ducks would come paddling over in a flurry of feathers and excited quacking, pecking at the floating crumbs with enthusiastic energy.
Buck loved it.
He loved the way the water rippled out in rings, the soft sounds of beaks on water, and the way Maddie would smile at him like he was doing something important.
He was.
In his young mind, he wasn’t just feeding ducks, he was taking care of them.
Or; Over the course of his life, when things feel like too much, Buck finds a lake, feeds the ducks… and tells them all his secrets.
