Summary
It’s screaming again. Shen Qingqiu lies unmoving in his bed, just listening to it for a long time. What wretched, heartbroken wails. It only stops for air, brief pauses as it fills up its lungs to screech it all out again, high and piercing. He put it in the sideroom to get it out of his sight, to try and muffle it, but it still feels as if it’s screaming directly into his ear. Not a soul on Qing Jing Peak must be able to rest with such a clamor.
Eventually, he does get up out of bed. It feels like dragging a corpse, his body aching and unwilling, still half torn apart from what he had gone through weeks ago. A pain so awful that it had felt like violation, torture. Almost nostalgic, really.
He opens the door to the sideroom, and it does somehow get louder. And there, in the little crib gifted (forced, snuck into his home while he was in labor) to him by Yue Qingyuan, is the infant. Shrieking, its voice ragged with unanswered despair, its little face screwed up hideously. It no longer looks red and shrunken all the time, but crying brings back that appearance.
It is almost always crying.

He is growling continuously, bent over with the pain of it. He claws mindlessly at the floor with his one good arm, digging deep gouges into the floor. He has to make it through this. He will make it through this. This will not bring him low. This will not--
Kneeling by his side, Shang Qinghua strokes his back. A mindless gesture of reassurance, his panic making him reach out and touch when he shouldn’t.
“My king, don’t worry,” Shang Qinghua says, and Mobei Li finds the strength to lift his head enough to see his face through a haze of pain. He is smiling nervously in that way that nonetheless promises miracles. “This servant will definitely fix it!”
The last vestiges of Mobei Li’s self control crumble and vanish. He slips harder and faster than he ever has before in his life.
He bursts into tears.

Summary
“Ah,” Yue Qingyuan says as he realizes what has happened, recognizing the golden dust after he’s already inhaled it. Being the Sect Leader of Cang Qiong Mountain, a cultivator of some repute, this is not the first time someone has attempted this sort of scheme on him; the taste is almost familiar. It is a common but effective aphrodisiac, relatively easy for malicious actors of this sort to get their hands on.
“What--?” Shen Qingqiu asks, throwing an arm up over his face, trying to block the dust with his sleeve. But he coughs, and Yue Qingyuan can already tell that it is too late for him as well. They have both breathed it in.
Oh, no.

Yue Qingyuan had screamed so much in the Ling Xi Caves. He’d screamed himself hoarse, and then some more. He screamed until his throat was torn asunder, and he’d been drowning in his own blood. Now, he feels a scream like that deep down in the pit of his throat, and yet it won’t come out. It’s stuck there, forever. Xiao-Jiu-- Yue Qingyuan won’t even be able to hold his bones. How could he fail so horribly? How could he--?
“But young master, are you certain that your brother is dead? He might be one of the survivors.”

Summary
Shen Qingqiu is sleeping in his peaceful Bamboo House, on his serene Qing Jing Peak, all as it should be - when a noisy, violent brute comes crashing through his door to disturb everything as usual.
“Shixiong!” Liu Qingge roars in the dead of the night into his dark and sleeping home. “Shixiong!”
Shen Qingqiu is out of his bed and has Xiu Ya unsheathed in less than a second, awoken as if by a lightning bolt. Liu Qingge comes stomping to his bedroom and shoves the door open - thoughtlessly bruteforces open the sealing talisman Shen Qingqiu puts there every night by habit - and stumbles inside, looking wildly for Shen Qingqiu before his eyes land on him.
“You’re alive--” he starts, but is interrupted by Shen Qingqiu’s attempt to cut his head off. With maddening ease, he deflects Shen Qingqiu’s strike reflexively, and has the unmitigated gall to give him a puzzled frown. “What are you doing?”
“Brute,” Shen Qingqiu gasps, shoving all of his fear behind a roaring fury, “get out of my home!”

“So, I was thinking about why I’ve been throwing up. I think some of it is the actual, physical properties of the taumoeba, but I honestly think half the battle is the taste. See, humans use smell and taste to tell us if food is going to make us sick, like it’s moldy or smells weird, that sends a signal for disgust to our brains to stop us from eating it, and that triggers nausea.”
“I feel this way about all human food,” I say, and Grace rolls its eyes.
“Sure. But I think my brain is being overprotective about the taumoeba. It’s the same reason why human kids get picky or people throw up during pregnancy, even when the food they’re eating is perfectly edible. My brain is signalling to me that I shouldn’t want it in my body, mostly because -- well, I don’t. It smells like mildew and algae and has the texture of chia seed pudding that was forgotten at the back of a fridge. But that’s making me nauseous when I even think about putting it in my mouth, which makes me more likely to throw up.”
“But how would you eat without using your mouth?” I ask.
Grace grins at me. “That, my friend, is exactly the question I’ve been asking myself. And I think the answer might be something called a nasogastric tube."

My throat tightens. "Does that mean there's something wrong? Are you sick?"
Rocky makes a gesture I usually interpret as "not exactly". "Not sick," he says. "But doctors still worry. When Eridian start to make fewer eggs, this usually means laying period of life is over soon. Rocky very young for this. Rocky supposed to be in ideal time of life for laying. Rocky younger than Adrian, even." He shifts on three of his feet. Already, my mind is racing ahead, wondering -- "Doctors told Rocky to ask Grace, is this radiation side effect, question?"
