JJ would have done anything for those eyes. Would have given anything. And did, a mean little voice whispers to her.

He giggles and throws himself at Luke’s leg, wrapping his tiny arms around it and tossing his head back to see his daddy fully. He cheeses through his crooked baby teeth and shakes Luke’s leg as he chirps, “Santa, Daddy! Santa!”
Brushing his fingers through JJ’s soft hair, he shoots Georgia a skeptical look as she dances into the room. She sets her radio down on the counter a little carelessly as another Christmas song comes on, then snatches JJ up like he weighs nothing. He giggles and sets his sticky baby hands on her cheeks as she peppers kisses all over his face between tone-deaf lyrics.
Voice a little rough, Luke gives her a pointed look, “Santa?”
“Yeah, Daddy, Santa!” She winks and leans in close to press her lips to his.

“Sorry to burst your bubble, but you don’t look good,” she admits bluntly.
It’s true. The color has faded further from his face and the bloody smear on his cheek just accentuates how pale he really is. He swipes his tongue across his lips, chapped and pale, and the smile that spreads across them is weak at best. The unsteady edge of his gaze keeps her attention though, even after he hides it back behind his arm again.
“Well, shit, Kie,” he mutters through dry lips, “way to sugarcoat it for me. You ain’t gotta kick a man when he’s already down.”
She bites back a smile as she leans over him, her fingers gentle against his wrist as she lifts his arm. He peeks one eye at her, then lets it fall shut again as her curls drape over his cheek. She sets his hand on his stomach and carefully turns his face away from her to study the wound in his hair.

Everything tilts three steps away from him. The warmth, the lights, the fire slide off to the edges. And his old bedroom floor rushes in.
He’s on his knees. No idea how he ended up there. The voice hits from somewhere above him, too loud. “You dumb little shit. Touch my stash again, I’ll snap your damn fingers.”
Dad's teeth grind and all JJ can think is bad… bad… get out.
