Summary
He should have seen it coming, really. Should have been prepared.
Not that he thinks it means anything to have a pretty warm good-smelling annoying mean boy sitting in his lap causing reactions- but the fact there is a reaction in the first place is enough cause for panic.
Because there definitely is a reaction.
Or: Connor sits in Kevin's lap during movie night, what happens next will surprise you.

Summary
A shadow made of light, the starry night sky taking shape. It’s both luminescent and reflective, like the opposite of a black hole (at least what he imagines a black hole to look like; he’s only heard the Narrator describe it once). The photo negative of a person, but one that isn’t quite human.
Or: Due to a glitch in the Parable, the Narrator's true form becomes visible unbeknownst to him. Stanley is more than a little fascinated.

Summary
He opens his mouth and is just going to ask, and then he’ll know, and he can put this eternal doubt behind him. Instead what comes out, to his greatest horror, is “What’s wrong with me?”
Or: Kevin doesn't think he knows how to human correctly.

Summary
“I really, really don’t want to talk about it. Not everyone gets given a bird they’re comfortable with.”
Something flashes in Kevin’s eyes. Like he understands far too much all at once. “Ooooooh,” he says, “is it a gay thing?"
Or: Connor is twelve when he finds out his bird is a peacock. Showy, flashy, colorful. Which is the complete opposite of what a good straight Mormon boy should strive to be.

Summary
Connor props his chin on his hand and slow-blinks up at him.
“Okay then, Mr. I’m-so-smart. Then you tell me: if all gay people go to hell, why aren’t you down there with us?”
When Kevin went down to earth to earn his wings, he thought it'd be an easy job: perform some miracles, show how much of a Good Guy he is, go back to heaven and live a carefree life.
Instead he gets Connor, who makes him question everything he stands for (and who has him wrapped around his finger from day one).

Summary
McKinley claps his hands together. “I just – I’m going to say it,” his expression is pinched, as though he’s holding his breath. “Elder Price. I’ve been having… gay thoughts. About you.”
Oh. Oh? Oh. Wow.
Kevin swallows. “Sorry?”
McKinley unclasps his hands, throws them up. “I know. I’m so sorry, I didn’t want to–” he’s making Kevin think of a wrung-out dishcloth. “Keep it from you any longer, I just felt so awful.” His face has gone red and blotchy, two twin points of pink high on his cheeks like a doll. “I thought you outta know. I know that we’re – moving away from the traditional and my SSA probably isn’t the end of the world but I felt terrible not telling you. Especially since we’re – I’d like to think we’re friends – and it’s a stressful position to put you in, and unfair, really, and don’t feel obliged to say anything at all, I just had to get it off my chest.”

Summary
If Kevin Price has a crush on Connor, that’s definitely something worth pursuing. Connor is whole-heartedly behind the idea. He hasn’t been as excited about anything since he realised he didn’t actually have to be a Mormon if he didn’t want to be. But he keeps a straight - for lack of a better word - face, and only steals glimpses back. They lock eyes over the dinner table and Connor can’t help the smirk that curls his lips, and doesn’t miss the way Kevin’s face mirrors his.
Well. Two can play at that game, Elder Price.

Summary
“You don’t ever seem… interested in things going further,” Connor sounds like he’s trying to be delicate about this. “And you look scared whenever we talk about it. And I just need you to know that I don’t care. It’s not the most important thing in a relationship, that’s bullshit,” face flushing red from cussing, “The most important thing to me is you being comfortable.”
“I’m sure that I’ll get better,” says Kevin.
Wrong thing to say. Connor’s expression twists.
“That you’ll get better?”
And it’s like something breaking, ice melting. “Because there’s something wrong with me?” says Kevin, and it comes out like a question. “There’s something wrong with me. I’m supposed to – I’m supposed to want you, like – like that, like how you do, and I don’t. I can’t.”

Summary
Like this, like this: Kevin is more gorgeous than ever – quiet, trying not to distract Connor or simply just staring into space, looking up and turning his head obediently whenever Connor asks him to. He is slowly, slowly becoming the boy who Connor was warned about – the boy who’d almost appeared promised by God to lead them to the successful completion of their mission – but not at the same time. His skin is more deeply tanned, his smile less perfected and more easy-going and his hair bleached-just by the sun.
Connor can’t take his eyes off him.
Which is why he screws up.
*****
Connor offers to cut Kevin's hair. He maybe ruins it. Kevin maybe ruins him right back.
