“So,” Ilya says, dragging the word out. He’s swiping at non-existent crumbs on the counter, avoiding his eyes. “You have dinner at parents on Christmas, yes?”
“Yeah.”
Ilya nods. “I can house-sit while you are away. Make place pretty, if you have decorations. Make it less boring.”
Shane’s eyebrows fly up. “What? You don’t want to come with?”
Finally, Ilya looks up at him. Hesitantly, he asks, “You want me to come with?”
Frowning, Shane says, “I– yeah. Yeah, of course. You think I invited you here just so you could spend Christmas alone?”
Looking away, Ilya shrugs. “I am intruder here, Hollander. You have family. I do not. Makes situation… difficult, maybe. You forget the world thinks we are rivals.”
“Not difficult,” Shane says immediately. “You want to come, you’re coming.”
Or: Ilya's in Montreal alone during the week leading up to the Winter Classic. Shane doesn't let him spend Christmas alone.

Summary
Ilya Rozanov wants to come out as Shane Hollander's boyfriend, and that means he needs to sacrifice his homeland, Russia. He brings Shane on a farewell tour of Moscow and comes face-to-face with more emotion than he bargained for.
Excerpt:
“I want to do something that means a lot to you, today,” Shane said.
Ilya looked up at him over their breakfast. They had room service deliver kasha with blueberries and milk for Ilya, and fish and rice for Shane. They had made a little spread at the table in the hotel room, the gauzy curtains beside them making the view of Revolution Square look ghostly behind it. The tourism book was on the bed, bookmarked as before, but Shane wasn’t looking at it – he was searching Ilya’s eyes.
“It means a lot that you are here.”
“I know, and I am so excited to keep doing things on our list. But I want to make sure that you get a chance to just…live? I guess? To say goodbye to the things that make Russia home? You know, in case you can’t…” He trailed off, but Ilya heard the rest of the sentence in his head, in Shane’s voice. “In case you can’t…come back?”
