Charles tried to shake the cotton from his thoughts, but Death was looking at him with the kindest eyes he had ever seen in his life or death. “Um – what about Edwin? You can’t split us up,” was all his mind could grab hold of.
“The ones we share a great love with never truly leave us. There are bonds that even Death cannot break.” She smiled softly again.
Charles felt comforted by that. Edwin would never truly leave him. “That’s – good,” he managed to say. He was feeling pretty peaceful about the whole thing, actually.
“Are you ready to find out what’s next?” Death asked as she extended her hand to him, palm up and welcoming.
Charles looked at Death, with her exceedingly kind eyes and her overwhelmingly tender smile, and her hand an invitation that he could not refuse.
He reached out and took it.
And Charles Rowland passed on to his afterlife.

Summary
Perhaps one of the lingering aftereffects of spending 70 years in hell is that even though Edwin trusts Charles implicitly, he still likes the comforting certainty of taking the lead and setting the pace in bed. Which is just brills, if you ask Charles, because what he likes more than anything is to be pressed into the sheets by Edwin and made to hear just how good and brave and lovely he is.

It is our privilege to welcome you back, one and all, for the Summer 2024 season at the London Athenaeum. As some of you will no doubt be aware, this past winter saw a spate of minor thefts, with one enterprising thief successfully removing a marble bust of the goddess Carpundia. We are pleased to report that the probate court proceedings are now complete, and all of the stolen artifacts have been returned to us. For safety reasons, we must now ask that all rosaries, japa mala, ojuzu, komboskini, misbaha and other similar prayer beads are left at the door and collected upon exit on account of one of our new acquisitions, a devil vitrified in a prism of glass, and the multiple recent incidents of attempted strangulation.
We are proud to present a slate of all new exhibitions and events, including the crown jewel of this season: an exhibition on the 170 year history of the Athenaeum itself by acting head curator Edwin Payne. This is the distillation of an extraordinary life’s work, and one not to be missed.

He lowers himself down to his knees, kneeling comfortably, hand sliding slowly up Charles's thigh.

Edwin is hit with a potion by the incubus they're chasing down. Charles is struggling to identify what exactly the potion did, but he can tell something's different about Edwin. Only in the process of figuring it out, he finds himself a bit distracted...
