Concerned when he arrived to see his friend so clearly in pain? Sure. Upset to find out Grian had been hiding this from him for the entire season? Yeah. Nauseated when he saw the dark bruising and blood spread across Grian’s back? Yes. Bloody terrified when he thought Grian’s previous captors may have something to do with this? Absolutely.
But panic didn’t set in until Grian was slumped unconscious in his arms.

It starts when Grian is afraid, even if there's no reason for him to be scared. One moment he's fine, sitting in this house he's built for himself on Hermitcraft where things were supposed to be good and supposed to be safe. Mumbo is nice, the others are nice. Hermitcraft is nice.
It doesn't stop Grian from being afraid every waking moment. His heart is exhausted from the adrenaline coursing through him. He's tired of running away from his past, and he's been running for a long, long time.
Watching doesn't hurt. When he Watches, he forgets about all the things that make Players hurt. And Grian is sick of hurting.

"Grian, what are these?"
Weakness, he tries to rasp; it comes out garbled, so he sucks in a long, slow breath and tries again, lungs trembling with the effort. "Weak– weakness."
Scar drops the bottle like it's burned him. "You took three weakness potions?" he chokes out, and that seems to break whatever trance Xisuma, Pearl, and Tango have been in this entire time. They rush forward, eating the distance between them in rapid strides, until they're all crouched around Grian.
Grian shuts his eyes again, before remembering he isn't supposed to do that. He wants to say sorry. What he says instead, is: "It was– safer. Like this. For you."
It amounts to about the same thing.
Or, I finally buckle down and post the rough draft of hunger au, where I give Grian every mental illness known to man and also a few new ones. Please heed the tags.

Tommy Craft, youngest child to the famed Philza Minecraft, was raised within war. Raised to fight, raised to kill, raised to revolt. As such, “childish antics” were war crimes that pushed boundaries between friends and enemies.
To be young, to not realize what was happening right before his very eyes- broken bonds and shattered memories of days long since past- how he wished he could be young inside and out, and not feel a decade older than he was; to not feel the pressing weight of abandonment on his shoulders day in and day out. Disappointed gazes- Techno, Phil, Tubbo, Wilbur- pressing into his back every. Single. D a y.
Exile, he figured, wouldn’t have been too bad had Dream not shown up to belittle him everyday, forcing him to burn his valuables, lest he get a sword punctured through his chest. However, two months in, he’s had enough.
No more shall he lay, wasting away, as Dream hounds him day after day with insults and demeaning remarks. No longer shall he stir in his anger when he can actually do something.
It’s time that “Tommyinnit” is laid to rest amongst the carcass of fire and ash, and a new form take his place.
