Maybe it’s only right that he finds himself in Belfast, a city tense with the start of something that promises bloodshed. His da, God rest his sweet soul, was a life-long Orange Order man, so this should be the perfect opportunity: the war Paddy was born ready for and something to fucking do.
The trouble of it is, Paddy hates the RUC, and he’s already been barred from most of the pubs in East Belfast.
OR: Paddy Mayne doesn’t care for sectarian politics, at least, not until he meets a certain Catholic boy who loves to court trouble.

This started out as a Brideshead Revisited AU of sorts, and does still draw from some themes (and lines!) from the book, but mostly it’s probably easiest to think of this as a generic 1920s AU featuring excesses of smoking, drinking wine, and the occasional night swim.

Lucrezia’s fingers twisted in the edge of the sheet she clutched to her chest. Her voice stayed soft. “The way you kiss me?”
The words landed with the weight of a stone dropped into still water. Cesare’s gaze lifted to hers. For a moment something raw and unguarded flickered across his features—eyes widening fractionally, breath catching as though she had touched an open wound. He shook his head once, almost imperceptibly. “No. Not like that.”
The silence that followed was heavy.

“Ahh Blair, there you are! You’ve even found the prodigal,” Ambrose says to Paddy, reaching up to throw an arm around Eoin’s shoulders, catching him mid-stride and turning him back around to face Paddy fully “Blair, you remember Eoin, my wee brother?”
Paddy almost laughs at the absurdity. Ambrose knows that he knows and has spent a great deal of time with the overabundance of McGonigal siblings, particularly with his youngest brother. Of course, he knows Eoin, has in fact been spending the past year and a half trying to forget Eoin, trying to lose him in the bottom of bottles and the hands of other men. Mat carefully maneuvered around the rushing servants — both those wearing Tylin's House Mitsobar's colors and the barely-dressed slaves that the Seanchan had brought with them or… or created here.
"Lord Mat, what are you doing in the halls?" one of Tylin’s people fussed at him as she passed by — no broad grin on her face today. "I'm certain your things have been packed already, or the queen can have new clothes made for you. You must find her majesty. She will be most cross if she is forced to leave without you." But she was in no mood to grab him and take him to Tylin, off on her own hurried and panic-driven errands.
Forced to leave?
And Mat felt something that he hadn't felt since he'd woken up here in the palace, every part of his body sharp with pain and a looming dread at the back of his mind when the first sound he heard was Tylin's voice — he felt hope.
It had to be Rand and his Asha'man. Nothing else could cause fear like this.

The moment the stranger crossed the cabin’s threshold, the air changed. Something bitter and cold seeped deeply into Paddy’s bones, his skin tingling with the ghost of an electric shock, and as the stranger closed and latched the door behind him, Paddy got the distinct impression that he had just trapped himself in a tiger’s cage.
