“When Ivan was younger, he rarely smiled around the aliens. He didn’t see much of a point in doing so- they would just ask him to sing and they would clap and laugh and jeer and he would be miserable. He knew he had to at least play along- he had been sold off to the highest bidder, of course, so they would not take kindly to their money being wasted. He thought of the bright-eyed boy behind the glass, the stickers saying ‘50% OFF’ and ‘DISCOUNT’ acting as scars marring the otherwise decent sight. Ivan remembered how the boy had clamored to get closer to him, crashing into the glass, and all he could muster was a blank stare at him. The other boy clearly didn’t understand the real world, their world, but Ivan did all too well.
When he later met the boy again, he was distinctly reminded of that moment.”
