Shane's face split into a sweet smile. Why had Ilya not fucking asked this question before in all these years of knowing, dating and now being married to Shane Hollander? His husband was blooming like a flower, happy that Ilya was showing so much interest in his heritage culture. Ilya had to do better by this man. He was going to do better.

Shane and Yuna shut down whenever Ilya tries to ask anything about Japanese culture. So Ilya keeps trying.

Summary
Shane has dealt with anxiety his whole life, he's pretty sure he was born this way. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean he always deals with it in the best way. He doesn't do it often, less since he and Ilya started whatever it is they were doing for the last decade. After all its harder to hide with Ilya's wandering hands. That doesn't mean it isn't inevitable, the control, the strict ritual, of it is unmatched. It's just been a hard week and anxiety has been buzzing beneath his skin too long and there's a box in his closet he can't stop thinking about. Ilya isn't here to stop him. Its inevitable.
This is me projecting my own experience of anxiety onto Shane Hollander.
Trigger Warning: Self-Harm. This was written as a way to prevent my own self-harm relapse and is based off my own experience with anxiety-driven self harm. I don't want to trigger anyone else into hurting themselves so please be aware and take care of yourselves. Be kind to yourself.

Summary
Shane knows the plan to wait to come out until they retire isn't ideal, but he doesn't have a better one. He thinks that he and Ilya can make it work, until his mom points out how long they will have to live their lives in the shadows.
But once he realizes that, he immediately knows that he can't come out. It would ruin his legacy.
He's pretty sure that's why he doesn't want to come out. No other reason. Right?
He is sure that's all it is until Ilya asks him if he would be safe if he came out. And he can't answer.

Shane lifts one eyelid again to look at Rozanov. His eyes are red-rimmed. Like he’s been crying. “Why…why aren’t you in Boston?”
Rozanov’s brow furrows. “Why would I be in Boston?”
“You, you’re captain. Raiders. Boston.”
The room is silent except for the beeping of monitors.
In 2023, Shane takes a bad hit on the ice. When he wakes up, the last thing he remembers is a tuna melt.
