Arthur couldn't withstand it—the yawning, fetid chasm carved into his chest, oozing anguish like a wound too long untended. It festered, rank and inescapable, its edges blackened and tender, and yet he couldn't resist probing it, dirtying his hands further in the process. He clawed at it relentlessly, as though pain might bring absolution or, at the very least, numbness.
