She drags Sonic along to find it, but neither of them know how to react when they discover that the “weapon” they’re meant to retrieve is actually a young, injured, terrified little hedgehog. He can smell a change in Sonic’s normal heart rate. His heart is racing, even more so than it usually is.
The change in scent sends signals to Shadow’s mind; old, instinctual ones. Ones he hasn’t had in a long time.
HELP HIM! his mind screams. HE’S GOING TO FAINT! ALERT HIM!
He shakes his head, mentally. Sonic doesn’t faint; at least, not that he’s seen.
Sonic’s not Maria.
And this isn’t a medical episode (to his knowledge); it’s a panic attack.
Although, Maria had had a lot of those, too.

Sonic is restless and Shadow has nightmares. Often, they find each other in the night and spar instead of sleeping. When not sparring in a way that looks similar to a murder attempt, they may be found being soft, opening up, and (literally) sleeping together.
Shadow is trying to learn how to heal. In attempt to give everyone a chance to be happy, he has to extend that to himself, and doing so means letting the people he cares about grow closer to him (even if it hurts).

After gifting Shadow his den so he has somewhere safe to stay while on the run, Sonic promises to keep Shadow’s fugitive identity and their growing friendship a secret in order to protect him.
Meanwhile, the Wachowski's under strict orders from G.U.N. to report any sightings of Shadow's whereabouts, and are clueless to Sonic’s escapades with their enemy. But, his plan to keep both sides of his life separate were dashed when Tails found out about Shadow and Sonic's relationship by himself, and now it’s only a matter of time before the rest of the family catch on, too.
Sonic is caught between his loyalty to Shadow and his duty to protect the family who saved him. He’s faced with the decision to betray Shadow's trust by revealing that his secret is compromised and lose what they have forever, or jeopardise Tom and Maddie’s safety by staying silent and intentionally deceiving G.U.N., risking everything they've built.
All Sonic has to do is maintain the balance without tipping the scales over the other, which shouldn't be an issue so long as he can keep his (probably, maybe, definitely romantic) feelings for Shadow under wraps.
What's the worst that can happen?

I’m here, he wants to reassure her, because Willow isn’t supposed to sound so gut-wrenchingly terrified, but his vocal chords don’t even flex, and his lips stay shut. I’m right here, I’m okay. I promise.
