    Every split in the timeline means one goes well and one goes badly. Statistically speaking, there has to be a timeline where everything goes wrong and everything is lost. But those timelines need to be pruned, sheared off the stronger branches where life still thrives. Cloud Strife is the only reason his current timeline exists. After giving Sephiroth the Black Materia to destroy the world, he's left to wander the barren landscape alone for all eternity. Unable to die because of his own link to Sephiroth, he's keeping this fading timeline open simply by existing. But Gaia needs this timeline gone, so there's only one option: Remove Cloud from it entirely, and hand him over to another.

    But this new world is very different from the one he originally comes from. On Gaia's World of the Tree, the most important bond people have is with the planet, while in Odin's World of the Wolf, that honor belongs to the bonds between people. Lifemates and packs, to be precise, so this is going to be interesting.

    Chapter 1's beginning spints off my fic On Bound and Broken Wings. That's the only OBABW reference though, the rest is standalone.

    Aerith Gainsborough has died many times in many timelines. With every kill, Jenova wears a different face and manipulates different puppets. A game of multi-dimensional chess is underway, forcing this physical manifestation of Holy to sacrifice herself in order to split timelines and move her pieces between them.

    Cloud Strife is a broken man with a tenuous grip on reality. Cut off by friends and driven by obsession, he no longer knows who he is, let alone what he's fighting for.

    Sephiroth is an experiment and will never be anything more. He isn't human, and the whispers of a creature tucked away in Nibelheim only underscore this reality. The Silver Sword does whatever he's told, and pushing him into using free will is easier said than done.

    Genesis Rhapsodos and Angeal Hewley are willing to throw everything away for him, to cut ties with Shinra in support of the man who saved their lives.

    Zack Fair is a SOLDIER First Class and a hero in the making. Steadfast and determined, he's the unstoppable force to anyone's immovable object, and maybe the key to tying everyone else together.

    This fic is (mostly) Crisis Core and Remake/Rebirth compliant. It takes place after Rebirth.
