Summary
His hands do not tremble when he pours out the salt. It's to be expected of course, because Grian has been doing it for ages by now, but in the quiet of the room, it feels significant.
"Scar." He does his best to keep his voice as steady as his hands, but it cracks near the end - a slight drawn-out r that nearly makes him frown. He's over this. He has to be, because there is only so much hurt his heart can take before it breaks into two identical parts. (One into his chest, and the other-)
No answer.
"Scar, I need you." A beat of silence. "Please."
The air fills with sulfur, and the smell Grian has come to associate with Scar, old wood thrown into the fire, ashes, and sugar makes his head spin. He doesn't have to open his eyes to know his wish has been granted.
"Well, hello there." His voice is the same as ever, warm and syrupy, honey trap for the unaware. His words are teasing, his tone familiar, and for an instant, a single second that makes his breath hitch, Grian can imagine it's his Scar standing in front of him.
He opens his eyes and stares coldly at the demon trapped in the circle of salt.

Summary
When Grian was informed that he would be given a bodyguard for his journey to the Rift he was… well let’s just say displeased would be putting it mildly.
Unsurprisingly, nobody in his family would listen to his very reasonable objections.
“Grian, mate,” Mumbo had said exasperatedly in response to his complaints. “It’s not a personal insult to your abilities. It’s just a matter of national security, you know? Think of it like… extra insurance.”
“More like extra annoying insurance,” Grian had grumbled.
“Oi, stop being a pain,” Mumbo had said, grabbing Grian in a headlock and rustling his hair. “Besides, every bodyguard I’ve ever had has been quite boring. You probably won't even notice they’re there.”
Christ, Grian wished Mumbo had been right.

Or: Scar has been hired to be Prince Grian's bodyguard for a year-long journey to study the Rift. Grian is not happy about it.

Summary
“You know Grian, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a panda before.” Scar states casually, as if that isn’t the most insane thing to say with no prior context.
“What do you mean by that Scar?” There’s an obviously-tired tone to Grian’s voice, which can be easily explained by the fact they’re lounging in their living room, sprawled across each other with a blanket carelessly tossed over them both. They had just finished watching a claymation movie Grian demanded they watch around Christmas every year and were soon to head off to bed.
Scar tells his boyfriend Grian he doesn't believe in pandas and Grian sets out to prove they exist.
Somewhere along the way, Scar realises he wants to marry him as soon as possible.

Summary
His words are rewarded with a laugh. It's a wild and hungry thing, the sound of faraway bells chiming in tandem. The corner of Grian's eyes crinkle, pink lips stretching into a satisfied smile, and Scar has to wet his own, overcome with the dizzying desire to consume.
Sandy brown hair dips into the cover of his shoulder, a whisper so close to his ear Scar cannot stop a shiver. "Are you loyal to the king?"
It makes him smile, sharp and slow, showing all of his razor-edged teeth as he whispers in kind. "Ah, but I promised him, the King, that I'll remain loyal to the end of my days." Dark eyes delight in the deception, pupils growing wide in half-hidden interest.
Loyal... Scar had never bothered precising to whom.

Scar starts to speak, taking a step forward, but Grian takes a step back, planting his hands on Scar’s shoulders. “It is too rash!” he insists. ”Too unadvised, too sudden. Too like the lightning, which doth cease to be ere one can say, ‘it lightens’.”
Scar says nothing — he has no written line here. But he takes Grian’s hand in his. He holds it, gently, as if it’s something fragile. Grian’s completely blindsided as he feels a pang in his chest. Oh, Scar.
He places his other hand over Scar’s, squeezing it reassuringly. His voice is soft as he finishes his line. “Sweet, good night…”
Aah. This is the part of the scene where Scar and Pearl would’ve. You know.
He sees Scar give an imperceptible nod, eyes locked with his.

Scar looked at him with interest. “You’ve been living here, all by yourself, for five years? I think I’d go crazy."
“Well, can’t promise I haven’t,” Grian said, shamefaced. After all, minutes earlier, he’d tapped into ancient magic to scream at a total stranger.
Likely not a total stranger, actually… he mused, remembering the matching rings.
There was an obvious question they raised. It was much too weighty to ask.
“Do you think we knew each other?” he asked instead. “During the months we both lost, I mean.”
Scar leaned back, thinking for a moment. “I mean, we must have at least met, right? If I knew your name, and you’ve got a ring I enchanted.”
Grian startled slightly. He hadn’t really had time to process the implications of the name, on top of everything else.
“You used my real name,” he said quietly. “Not many people even knew that one.”Or: Famed wizard Scar finds himself wandering in an unfamiliar land with no memory of how he got there. Grian, the dutiful Watcher, finds himself staring at a reflection he doesn't quite recognize, haunted by a sense of unease. Together, they must figure out what happened and what connects them to each other.

A lighthouse—his lighthouse—is sketched into the card with carefully crafted blue-gray pencil strokes. It warbles as he flips it over.
Scar’s glimmering eyes are set in Grian’s periphery, watching as he reads over the jagged penmanship someone has haphazardly scrawled across the entire back side, slanted and faded as if they hadn’t stolen enough time to write it.

Or…When a storm washes ashore an American Navy sailor from the future, Grian finds himself caught in a plot to rewrite history.
The strangest thing by far is the familiarity he finds in the sailor’s company. A man who should be impossible to know is suddenly the only recognizable thing between Grian’s unusual bouts of sea madness.

The man hovering over him leaned back, releasing Grian completely. Cold night air rushed in to fill the void.
“I guess it’s out in the open now,” the stranger hummed. “Shame. I wanted to avoid this.”
With the additional glow occupying the space between them, Grian was finally able to catch features that were lost in the prior darkness. His curiosity outweighed all else, and he drank them in greedily. As soon as he saw who sat across from him, alarms blared in his mind.
This man wasn’t a civilian, wasn’t even a hero.
“Hello, Doctor,” the villain mused. “You were quite the help today.”
