The reception hall windchimes tinkle an arrival; in hindsight, Wei Wuxian thinks they’re laughing at him.
He straightens up from behind the front desk, where he’s stocking buckets of live fire-ants for the discerning phoenix owner, and chirps, “Wei Wuxian’s Magical Menagerie – how can I help you today?”
Wei Wuxian runs a vet clinic for all sorts of exotic specimens. Lan Wangji is not an exotic specimen, but rather a single dad doing his best for his kid and his magical bunny.

Wei Ying squints in the darkness at the figure approaching him, second-guessing himself for a moment before the figure steps out into the narrow pool of light that Wei Ying is casting with his phone, and sure enough: tall, clothed all in white, mouth set in a thin line, watching Wei Ying with judgmental eyes.
Great. Just great.
It's not that Wei Ying has anything against Lan Zhan—on the contrary. But they aren't exactly on the best terms these days, and Wei Ying needs this job. Lan Zhan getting in the way will just complicate matters.
Or, a spontaneous night hunt together leads to unexpected results.

Summary
the instructions for the summoning ritual, from Jin Guangyao’s room to Mo Xuanyu’s hand, get mixed up. He completes the rituals. He’s sure he did everything right. Step by step. By all evidence, it must have worked. So why is he still alive and well?
Miles away, in an inn in Dafan Mountain, Wei Wuxian wakes up in a body that’s wearing all purple. And has Zidian on his right hand. Panicked, Wei Wuxian calls: “Jiang Cheng! Jiang Cheng!” and jumps up to find a mirror. He knows he hasn’t possessed Jiang Cheng. So why would he be in his body? all the while he keeps frantically calling Jiang Cheng’s name.
It takes several moments for Jiang Cheng to come to himself...as much as he COULD come to himself when he's lost control of his own body, and hears Wei Wuxian’s panicked voice in his mind. All of this could have just been a sleep paralysis or something (except that he knows he wasn't sleeping. He was doing paperwork)...but then he hears his own voice calling his own name as his body takes the liberty to jump up and start searching the room.
Then comes the answer to Wei Wuxian’s frantic calling from inside of his mind: “WEI WUXIAN?!”Bookmarked by SeattleSteph
